Little orphan Annie finds a temporary home at the Tivoli Theatre

- STAFF REPORT

“Annie,” the beloved musical based on the 1920s comic strip “Little Orphan Annie,” will stop in the Tivoli Theatre on Tuesday-Wednesday, May 2-3, as part of its U.S. national tour. Angelina Carballo, a 12-year-old actress from South Florida, is cast in the title role. She appeared in the first season of the tour three years ago playing one of the orphans.

“Annie” is the 13th-longest-running American musical in Broadway history. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the original 1977 production, which ran for 2,377 performances on Broadway and won seven Tony Awards.

A mixture of pluck and optimism, Annie is an orphan in search of her parents. With the help of the other girls in Miss Hannigan’s orphanage, Annie foils Miss Hannigan’s evil plans, meets President Franklin Roosevelt and finds a new home with billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

The score is filled with Broadway favorites such as “It’s a Hard-Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” “I Don’t Need Anything But You” and the anthem of positive thinking, “Tomorrow.”

Gilgamesh Taggett is cast as Oliver Warbucks, Erin Fish is Miss Hannigan, Casey Prins is Grace Farrell and Jeffrey B. Duncan is FDR.

And of course Annie will have her dog, Sandy, along for her adventures. Sandy is played by rescue terrier mixes Sunny and Macy.

Directed by original lyricist and director Martin Charnin for the 19th time, this production of “Annie” is a fresh interpretation of the iconic original.
