Scenic City Chorale’s spring concert Sunday

The Scenic City Chorale will present its annual spring concert, “How Can I Keep from Singing,” on Sunday, May 7, at 3 p.m. at Brainerd United Methodist Church, 4315 Brainerd Road.

The concert theme is the title of one of the program’s selections, arranged by local musician Penny Downs Tullock for female voices.

The concert will open with “Te Deum,” by English composer John Rutter. The piece is based on ancient liturgical texts, originatin­g perhaps as early as the fourth centu- ry. It will be accompanie­d by brass ensemble, timpani and organ.

Two s el ections of Hebrew origin will be sung: “Song of Galilee” in Hebrew and “Peace, arranged by Chorale member Karen Diamond, set to an English text and adapted from Sim Shalom.

Three traditiona­l spirituals are included in the program. “Ain’t Got Time To Die” features University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a music major and tenor soloist Jeron Burney. He has been chosen to attend Centro Studi Italiani in Italy this summer to study opera.

Selections from the musicals “Carousel” and “The Phantom of the Opera” are on the program, along with the “Soldiers’ Chorus” from “Faust,” performed by the men of the chorale.

The concert will conclude with “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” arranged and recorded by Robert Shaw and Robert Russell Bennett.

The concert is free; h o weve r donations will be accepted. The 65-member all-volunteer chorale is directed by Ron Starnes, with Louise Stephens as associate director. Accompanis­ts are Jim Martin and Freda Hart.
