‘Elemeno Pea’ at UTC

- STAFF REPORT

Molly Metzler’s comedy about ambition, regret and how the choices we make shape who we become play out in the next production by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Theatre Company.

“Elemeno Pea” centers around sisters Devon and Simone. Devon is a wise-cracking, blue-collar social worker; Simone is a personal assistant to Michaela Kell, trophy wife of a wealthy ad executive. When Michaela shows up at the sister’s weekend, she’s in hysterics with the threat of her marriage falling apart.

Worlds collide and the sisters square off in this play about class and family. Metzler, whose film and television credits include “Orange Is the New Black,” shows just how far people will go to fit in.

The play will be presented in the Dorothy Hackett Ward Theatre of the UTC Fine Arts Center beginning Tuesday, Feb. 13, through Saturday, Feb. 17. Audiences are advised that “Elemeno Pea” contains adult language and content.

“The play is a dark comedy that tackles the ideas of wealth and privilege,” says director Gaye Jeffers. “The wonderful gift of the play is that it challenges us to look at our preconceived notions of those who live without material need, but still remain in need in other ways. Empathy for others remains in short supply, regardless of income level.”

Carmin Pebley and Leigh-Ana Sharkey play sisters Simone and Devon, respectively. Rounding out the cast are Zack Shreeve as Ethan, Linsey Watkins as Michaela and Jesse Wilyat as Jos-B.

The creative team includes Adam Miecielica, set design; Kimberly Davis, costuming; and John R. Burgess, lighting design and technical director. Hannah Davis is stage manager.

Tickets, $12 and $10, can be purchased at the Fine Arts Center box office in person or by phone at 423-425-4269.
