Southern University hosts Herbert Blomstedt

Herbert Blomstedt, conductor laureate of the San Francisco Symphony, will be in residence at Southern Adventist University Monday through Wednesday, March 5-7, as a guest of the Eugene A. Anderson Organ Series.

In constant demand as a guest conductor, Blomstedt has led many of the world’s greatest orchestras. He holds membership in the Royal Musical Academy of Stockholm and was awarded Columbia University’s Ditson Award for Distinguis­hed Service to American Music in 1992.

He received Austria’s Anton Bruckner Prize in 2001 and Denmark’s Carl Nielsen Prize in 2002. He is a Knight of the North Star, Stockholm, and a Knight of the Dannebroge­n, Copenhagen.

Each evening, t he noted conductor will present either a lecture or direct a concert. All events are free and open to the public.

March 5, 7:30 p.m.. Collegedal­e Church of Seventh- day Advent i sts, 4829 College Drive E.

Blomstedt will lead a hymn sing, along with a short organ recital performed by Southern students playing the Anton Heiller Memorial Organ.

March 6, 7:30 p.m., Ackerman Auditorium in Mabel Wood Hall on the university campus.

Blomstedt will present a lecture on Johannes Brahms’ German Requiem along with a screening of his performanc­e of the work with the Danish National Symphony.

March 7, 7:30 p.m., Ackerman Auditorium in Mabel Wood Hall on the university campus.

Blomstedt will conclude his residency with a round-table discussion.
