Screaming Females at Sluggo’s Tuesday

- STAFF REPORT

After 13 years of music-making, indie punk trio Screaming Females has managed to retain their individuality and remain steadfastly DIY. That’s helped them grow a reputation as one of the most dynamic touring bands out right now.

Screaming Females released its seventh studio album, “All At Once,” in February, and have been touring in support of it. The trio will wrap up this leg of the tour on Tuesday, April 24, with a show at Sluggo’s, 505 Cherokee Blvd., at 7 p.m.

“All At Once” has received widespread praise from NPR, Rolling Stone and other industry media outlets. The video for its track “I’ll Make You Sorry” was directed by Lance Bangs (Nirvana, Yeah Yeah Yeahs).

Consequence of Sound website claims“the 15- track effort is said to be the punk trio’s most expansive and imaginative work to date, and one whose arrangements are meant to evoke the energy and spontaneity of their live shows. (And their live shows are no joke.)”

King Mike and Marissa Paternoster formed the band during high school in New Jersey — only then it was named Surgery on TV. After some lineup changes, and the addition of drummer Jarrett Dougherty, they decided to keep the band to a trio and called themselves Screaming Females. They held shows in homes of students and other bands so that people under 21 could come.

With “All At Once,” the trio continues to stretch its sound. For the first time, they’ve included instruments such as synths and xylophones in their music.

Hear it live at Sluggo’s on Tuesday. For more information: 423-752-5224.
