Rock Eupora headlines at JJ’s

- STAFF REPORT

Born and raised in Jackson Miss., Clayton Waller, aka Rock Eupora, creates a lively blend of rock and pop straight from his DIY home studio.

Now based in Nashville, Rock Eupora combines earworm hooks and heartfelt lyrics to create his take on power pop. With the release of “Soon the Sun Will Come” two years ago, Waller took his music to a more polished indie sound.

In a live setting, Rock Eupora takes the shape of a full band to create an exhilarating, unforgettable experience. The band is headlining a rock show Saturday, April 21, at 9 p.m. in JJ’s Bohemia, 231 E. M.L. King Blvd.

On the bill with Rock Eupora are Kerchief and Chilhowee Royal.

Kerchief is a local rock and roll trio. Chilhowee Royal is a “little psych-y, garage- y, grungy, rock four- piece” from Cleveland, Tenn.

Waller started taking piano lessons at age 5, and quickly discovered his love for songwriting and performing.

While a junior at Mississippi State University, he helped form rock power trio Wolf Cove. Although the group dissolved as graduation approached, the experience reaffirmed his passion for music.

During his senior year of college at Mississippi State, Waller wrote and home-recorded the debut album, “Blanks.” As an homage to his Mississippi roots, he named the new project after the nearby town of Eupora.

After moving to Nashville in 2014, Waller began writing and recording his second full-length album in his apartment basement, once again playing every instrument on the album. After adding musicians to form the band, Rock Eupora began playing some of Nashville’s most popular venues including Marathon Music Works, Exit/In and Mercy Lounge. Rock Eupora maintains an impressive touring schedule, and the band’s stop at JJ’s is part of its East Coast tour.

Tickets to the JJ’s performance are $7.
