Bacon makes everything better — including distilled spirits. The divine swine accounts for one- half of the Bacon & Barrel Festival on Friday night in First Tennessee Pavilion.
This benefit for Chattanooga Market brings together 15 local restaurants offering samples of bacon and barbe-
cue. Among participating eateries are Urban Stack, Hi- Fi Clyde’s, Cafe on the Corner, Base Camp, Milk & Honey, Wine Down, Beast + Barrel, 2 Sons Kitchen and Market, Mexiville, Rolling J’s, Bones Smokehouse and Mike’s Smokehouse.
Chat with representatives from more than 40 distilleries while sipping their bourbons, whiskeys and all the good things that come from aged oak barrels.
Each ticket includes 15 whiskey tastings, unlimited food samples, live music and a photo booth. Full-size beer and cocktails will be available for purchase at the cash bar.
Parking is $1 per hour in lots to the north and south of Finley Stadium. However, since guests will have access to so many spirits, festival organizers have partnered with Lyft to offer ride discounts to the festival. Save 15 percent off two rides to or from Bacon & Barrel with code BACON18.
Organizers request pets be left at home.
MEMORIES OF MAYBERRY Where:
› Downtown square, Valley Head, Alabama › When: 9 a. m.-5 p. m. CDT Saturday, June 2 › Admission: Free, donations accepted › For more information: 256-635-6814
Valley Head is a small town of 536, give or take, says town clerk Debra Rhodes. But residents are planning for 3,500 visitors this weekend, based on last year’s attendance at the inaugural Memories of Mayberry festival.
Like Andy Griffith’s “Mayberry R.F.D.,” Valley Head is a small town with a town square that’s the perfect backdrop for this throwback festival. The fundraiser for the Valley Head Volunteer Fire Department includes food, entertainment, a cruise-in, pie-baking contest and Aunt Bee’s Canned Dill Pickle Contest.
There will be food and craft vendors for visitors to shop; inflatables and arts and crafts for the kids. There will be music all day, and pickers are invited to bring their instruments to play as well.
But the big draw is the nostalgia of recalling favori te episodes and characters from the long- running TV series. Look for the old black- and- white police car on the square and you might run into Deputy Barney Fife (Barney Woods), who will be out “protecting and serving.” There will be l ook- alikes playing Floyd the barber and Otis the alcoholic, and rumor has it even the Darlings are coming into town for the festival.
New this year: A parking plan. Visitors will park at Va l l e y He a d High School, 235 First Ave., and catch a free shuttle to the festival site.
