World music at The Signal

Two artists from the world- music genre will perform at The Signal on Wednesday, Aug. 1.

Opening the 8: 30 p. m. show will be Xiuhtezcat­l Martinez, who performs under just his first name.

Xiuhtezcat­l is a hiphop arti s t and youth director of Earth Guardians, a global conservati­on organizati­on. He grew up immersed in the Aztec traditions of his father and advocating for social and environmen­tal justice with his mother.

As a teenager, he gave TED talks and spoke to the United Nations on environmen­tal policy. In addition to performing, he is the author of “We Rise: The Earth Guardians Guide to Building a Movement That Restores the Planet.”

Headliner Nahko and Medicine for the People is an alternativ­e world-music collective. The six- member group is headed by frontman Nahko Bear, whose music also promotes social change.

The band incorporat­es a variety of sounds ranging from alternativ­e roots to acoustic rock, hip-hop, folk, tribal and earthbased.

Their t hird al bum, 2016’s “HOKA,” was named the 2017 Record of the Year by the Native American Music Awards.

“HOKA” debuted at No. 10 on Billboard’s Rock Album Chart and No. 6 on the Alternativ­e Album Chart.

Nahko’s solo album, “My Name is Bear,” debuted on a number of Billboard charts including Independen­t Albums (No. 11), Tastemaker­s (No. 14) and Emerging Artists ( No. 19). The album also reached No. 1 on iTunes.
