World music at The Signal
Two artists from the world- music genre will perform at The Signal on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
Opening the 8: 30 p. m. show will be Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, who performs under just his first name.
Xiuhtezcatl is a hiphop arti s t and youth director of Earth Guardians, a global conservation organization. He grew up immersed in the Aztec traditions of his father and advocating for social and environmental justice with his mother.
As a teenager, he gave TED talks and spoke to the United Nations on environmental policy. In addition to performing, he is the author of “We Rise: The Earth Guardians Guide to Building a Movement That Restores the Planet.”
Headliner Nahko and Medicine for the People is an alternative world-music collective. The six- member group is headed by frontman Nahko Bear, whose music also promotes social change.
The band incorporates a variety of sounds ranging from alternative roots to acoustic rock, hip-hop, folk, tribal and earthbased.
Their t hird al bum, 2016’s “HOKA,” was named the 2017 Record of the Year by the Native American Music Awards.
“HOKA” debuted at No. 10 on Billboard’s Rock Album Chart and No. 6 on the Alternative Album Chart.
Nahko’s solo album, “My Name is Bear,” debuted on a number of Billboard charts including Independent Albums (No. 11), Tastemakers (No. 14) and Emerging Artists ( No. 19). The album also reached No. 1 on iTunes.
