Chattanooga Market opens Sunday with Run of Honor

- STAFF REPORT

Chattanooga Market will host the fifth annual Run of Honor 8k and onemile run on Sunday, Sept. 9, to honor public servants of our community. Opening ceremonies will begin at 7: 45 a. m. Sunday with the national anthem sung by Jason Lyles.

The Run of Honor is Chattanooga’s only 8k USATF- certified course. It is a scenic race that starts on Carter Street at t he corner by Finley Stadium, travels up Main Street to circle the National Cemetery, then return to Finley Stadium to end on the 50-yard line. A course map is available at RunOfHonor.org.

“The impetus for the fundraiser was to recognize those who serve our country and support their families,” says Chris Thomas, who worked with Chattanooga Police officer John Collins to organize the inaugural run in 2014. “The inclusion of the National Cemetery brings it all home.”

Organized this year by the Chattanooga Track Club, the run will raise money for two causes.

Proceeds will benefit the Sgt. Tim Chapin Scholarship Fund. Chapin, a former member of the Rock City Lodge FOP, died in the line of duty. The fund was set up to provide financial assistance for an achieving student who is the son or daughter of an active member of Rock City Lodge.

The race will also benefit the Fort Campbell Fisher House, which is home to families who are in need of a place to live while their loved ones receive medical care from a VA or military medical center.

Registration for the run is available online or at Chattanooga Market Sunday from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. The race starts at 8 a.m.

Major award winners will receive custom pottery trophies designed by market vendor Windy Hill Pottery, and other commemorative awards will go to various age groups immediately following the race.

After the race, guests can shop the market’s vendors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
