TENNESSEE AQUARIUM MARKS LEMUR DAY WITH SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Because of a host of ecological challenges in their native Madagascar, more than 100 species of lemurs are endangered to one degree or another. As a group, they are the world’s most-imperiled class of mammal.

But one day every year, people the world over are encouraged to appreciate these acrobatic creatures and learn more about their unique adaptation­s and the threats they face.

World Lemur Day is Saturday, Oct. 20, and visitors to the Tennessee Aquarium’s Ocean Journey building will enjoy a packed schedule of special events and programs highlighti­ng the Aquarium’s ring- tailed and red- ruffed lemurs. Several other animals native to Madagascar will be featured as well.

Mee t an ima l experts in the Tropical Cove Gallery for up- close- and- personal encounters with lemurs, colorful panther chameleons, enormous radiated tortoises and the Madagascar hissing cockroach. Leaping Lemurs animal programs will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.

During the rest of the day, visitors may snap pics in a special photo booth, snag a hug with a roaming lemur mascot and craft lemur masks.

World Lemur Day activities are free with regular Aq u a r i u m a dmission between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Admission is $ 29.95 adults, $ 18.95 children ages 3-12.

Guests wanting to take home a souvenir will find special paintings made by the lemurs in the Aquarium’s gift shop. There are also fair- trade goods in the gift shop that were made by Malagasy artisans. A portion of sales of these goods will benefit the Aquarium’s partnershi­p with the internatio­nal Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group.
