RECEPTION FRIDAY OPENS IN-TOWN’S ‘ALL-MEMBER SHOW’

- STAFF REPORT

It’s out with the old and in with the new as In-Town Gallery prepares for its “All-Member Show.”

Painters, photographers, jewelers, potters, sculptors and woodworkers will present their latest work in this month-long show at the gallery, 26-A Frazier Ave. The show will open with a reception on Friday, May 3, from 5 to 8 p.m.

The “All-Member Show” welcomes In-Town’s newest members: potter David Harris and painter Jane Newman. The public is invited to meet the new artists and see the latest artwork of over 30 artists.

Until 2012, Harris was a history teacher, though he has worked with pottery since 1994. Creating in clay whenever he could, he began attending workshops and sought out experienced potters as he honed his technique.

“My passion is utilitarian ware — things that people use every day — but I want these pieces to have beauty and character,” Harris says.

Newman has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Memphis State University and enjoyed a career as a graphic designer and art director. A painter of still life, landscape and portraits, she is often inspired by nostalgic objects that bring to mind memories from the past. Her paintings are infused with an interplay of light and shadow.

“My style has been evolving, and I’ve been working to create images that can be viewed as either abstract designs or hyper-realism, depending on the viewer’s position,” she says.

The “All-Member Show” continues through May 30. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
