The Great Chill & Churn

Think you have a prizewinning homemade ice cream recipe? How many cups of the creamy, sweet treat can you eat before you reach brain freeze?

Test both on Saturday, June 1, when The Great Chill & Churn Homemade Ice Cream Contest is held at the Summerville Depot, 120 E. Washington St. in Summerville, Georgia, sponsored by Summerville Main Street.

The event offers cash prizes, the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s steam engine, vendors and entertainment.

This dairy day at the depot kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with registration for the homemade ice cream contest as well as an ice cream-eating contest.

Ice cream-eating contestants may register to compete in one of three age divisions. Competitors will race to see who can eat the most ice cream in five minutes.

These three contests begin at 11 a.m., and first place winners in each age division will receive $25. Second- and thirdplace winners will also be recognized.

Registration for the Chill & Churn Homemade Ice Cream Contest is open to the public.

Contestants may either turn in registration forms to Summerville City Hall prior to June 1 or register on-site Saturday between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

Competitors in the Chill & Churn general competition have the chance to win a $500 grand prize. Second place receives $250, third place $100. Churning begins at 12:15 p.m. Any flavor ice cream recipe is allowed for competition.

Competitors may also compete for the People’s Choice Award. Visitors at the depot can purchase a $5 wristband, which allows them to sample all People’s Choice entries, then vote for their favorite between 1:15 and 2 p.m. Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. at the event’s conclusion.
