Sewanee Summer Music Festival concerts set to begin Saturday

More than 200 young musicians from across North America, Europe, Asia, Central America and South America have arrived on Monteagle Mountain to participat­e in Sewanee Summer Music Festival 2019.

The annual music festival’s concert season opens Saturday, June 15, continuing through July 14.

Living on the campus of Sewanee: The University of the South, students will participat­e in daily orchestra rehearsals, chamber music coaching, weekly lessons and master classes with the faculty.

In addition, students may elect to study compositio­n, attend a conducting workshop, take part in the concert competitio­n or perform in student showcase concerts.

This summer, the festival will explore the beauty of the natural world and the connection between music and nature. Orchestral literature and chamber music programmin­g will incorporat­e music inspired by nature’s beauty.

The festival’s Cumberland Orchestra will be conducted by Gene Moon and Janna Hymes.

This orchestra offers students a broad range of literature, much of which they have not experience­d before. Cumberland Orchestra offers pre-college and college participan­ts the opportunit­y to study, learn and grow as orchestral performers.

The Cumberland Orchestra will perform Sundays at 2:30 p.m. CDT.

Sewanee Symphony members will play under conductors Oriol Sans, JoAnn Falletta, Gemma New and Jacomo Bairos.

This symphony is for the most advanced students, a pre-profession­al ensemble introducin­g them to the world of orchestra life. Students will study core literature, explore contempora­ry works and collaborat­e with faculty soloists.

The Sewanee Symphony will perform on Sundays at 3:30 p.m. CDT.

The festival’s summer concert series will open Saturday with a performanc­e in the Faculty Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. CDT in Guerry Auditorium.

Student chamber concerts will be held Friday evenings; Garth Chamber concerts and Faculty Artist Series concerts will take place on Saturdays.

All tickets for the Sewanee Summer Music Festival 2019 season are available for purchase online at ssmf.sewanee. edu/tickets.

A season ticket for $125 provides admission to all 14 ticketed concerts. Tickets for individual performanc­es are $20.

When you have completed your purchase, print your receipt and present the receipt at the first SSMF concert you attend to redeem your season pass.
