LET ARETHA TAKE YOU TO CHURCH SUNDAY

Hear Aretha Franklin singing in the prime of her life when “Amazing Grace” is screened Sunday, July 28, as part of the Bobby Stone Film Series at the Tivoli Theatre, 709 Broad St.

“Amazing Grace” is the documentary featuring Franklin recording her 1972 live album of the same name in Los Angeles. She is backed by the Southern California Community Choir.

Gospel songs performed on the doubleplatinum album include “Precious Lord Take My Hand,” “Mary, Don’t You Weep,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” “Precious Memories,” “Wholy Holy” and the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

“Amazing Grace” won the award for Outstanding Documentary at the 2019 NAACP Image Awards.

The documentary will be shown Sunday at 2 and 6 p.m.

But first, hometown son Samuel L. Jackson appears Saturday, July 27, in the film “Pulp Fiction.”

Although “Pulp Fiction” was Jackson’s 30th film, it is arguably the one that sealed his status as a star of international acclaim.

“Pulp Fiction” involves two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits in four, intertwining tales of revenge, violence and redemption.

Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, the movie also stars John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Tim Roth and Ving Rhames. The title refers to pulp magazines and crime novels that were popular during the mid-20th century.

Show times Saturday are 3 and 7 p.m.
