SATURDAY

OK, all you Eggheads, it’s show-andtell time Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Collegedale Commons.

Folks who love grilling and smoking on Big Green Eggs — known as Eggheads — will gather in the pavilion to watch what grillmasters can make on their eggs and hear how to do it at the third Scenic City EggFest, Tennessee’s first event dedicated to the Big Green Egg. But you don’t have to own a Big Green Egg to attend; the cook-off is open to anyone who loves the flavor of grilled and smoked meats.

There will be 25 local and regional teams competing in a cook-off.

“They’ll be cooking barbecue favorites like ribs and brisket as well as other Southern specialties like mac and cheese and Brunswick stew,” says John Rutter, director of marketing and innovation for sponsor Elder’s Ace Hardware.

“Whether you own a Big Green Egg or just want to sample unique recipes like grilled pizza or baked desserts, the Scenic City EggFest is the event for you,” he says.

For a $20 ticket, visitors receive one drink ticket for a Coca-Cola product and can sample as much as they want from all the teams grilling, smoking and baking on a Big Green Egg. Then ticketholders can vote for their favorite cook team for a People’s Choice award.

The ticket also includes admission to four afternoon classes that will be led by Big Green Egg-sperts.

Rutter encourages visitors to ask questions of the grill teams. Learn about their recipes, ingredients and techniques.

“Everybody is very willing to share how they cook. Some teams have their recipes online. Some will share their seasonings and how they cook different recipes. It’s a grilling event, so you don’t have to have a Green Egg to make these recipes,” he points out.

Rutter says each cooking team gets two Green Eggs on which to cook, then those grills are sold at a deeply discounted rate after the event. He recommends that anyone interested in purchasing one of these grills reserve one online before the event to take home Saturday afternoon.

Scenic City EggFest cooks for a cause. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
