- STAFF REPORT Compiled by Susan Pierce.

Internationally acclaimed cellist Thomas Landschoot will be the featured artist in the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera’s next Masterworks concert.

“Miraculous Mandarin” will be presented tonight, Oct. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Tivoli Theatre, 709 Broad St.

Landschoot will play Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major, a work known for showcasing the many facets of the cello.

“Thomas Landschoot is a very sensitive musician, who will bring out the most intricate nuances in Haydn’s music. I am looking forward to working with him and sharing his talents with the Chattanooga audience,” says Kayoko Dan, CSO music director.

The program will also include contemporary American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s “Three Latin American Dances” and Bartok’s “The Miraculous Mandarin Suite,” a piece that shares one of classical music’s most sordid tales through dramatic strings, an iconic waltz and expressive winds.

“Hungarian composer Bela Bartok’s work is very colorful, innovative and exciting,” says Dan.

“Gabriela Lena Frank’s music is often influenced by Bartok’s works, and you may hear some similarities in motifs and orchestration. Frank’s work is extremely fun, exhilarating and skillfully crafted, and I know the audience will fall in love with her style of music.”

Tickets for “Miraculous Mandarin” begin at $21. They can be purchased by calling the CSO Box Office at 423-267-8583 or online at http://chattanoogasymphony.org/.
