Southern Adventist University will host acclaimed double bassist Xavier Foley in a recital Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Ackerman Auditorium on the university’s campus in Collegedal­e.

The performanc­e will include Foley’s double concerto “For Justice and Peace,” a piece commission­ed by Carnegie Hall and the Sphinx Organizati­on.

Foley received the 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and New York’s WQXR radio station included him on its “19 for 19” artists to watch list. He has traveled extensivel­y as a concert soloist.

Admission is $5 door.

“When I programmed this Liederaben­d, I thought it would be fascinatin­g to feature one poem that is written in three different settings by three composers to show diverse perspectiv­es,” says Lee.

Playing will be piano students Eunseo Kim, Xinyu Lin and Michaela Moore, with singers Libby Clark, Gabrielle Flannery, Cecilia Fornuto and John Mburu.

Dr. Mark Bailey conducts the symphonic band in a concert marking its 30th anniversar­y. The band’s vocal ensemble and rhythm section will be featured. Current and alumni members will perform.

Since forming in 1989 with 18 students, the band has grown to 47 musicians, toured across the United States as well as to 17 countries on five continents. It was the first collegiate band in the nation to perform in Jordan and, in 2011, the first U.S. concert band to perform in Cuba since 1958.
