Lee Theatre presents ‘Silent Sky’
Lee University Theatre will present the true story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt in “Silent Sky,” which opens for five performances on Friday, Nov. 1.
“Silent Sky,” written by Lauren Gunderson, will be presented in the Buzz Oates Theatre, located in the Communication Arts Building on the Lee campus in Cleveland, Tennessee.
“We are excited to feature this play about an important woman by a contemporary female playwright, featuring four actresses in our program along with one actor,” said Dr. Christine Williams, professor of theater and director of the play.
“Silent Sky” is set in the early 1900s. It follows the story of Leavitt while exploring a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them.
Leavitt joins a group of women “computers” at Harvard Observatory, charting the stars for a renowned astronomer who has no time for the women’s probing theories. Leavitt also experiences difficultly balancing her dedication to science with family obligations and the possibility of love.
“Our design team has worked hard to create a beautiful and exciting world onstage for this play about the stars and our place in the universe,” said Williams.
“Silent Sky” is recommended for ages 10 and older.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children and senior adults. They are available at the box office one hour before curtain or online at www.showclix.com.
