‘Luting’ in the streets at the Summervill­e Renaissanc­e Festival

Royalty, knights, minstrels and fairies will be found on the streets of Summervill­e, Georgia, during the fifth annual Summervill­e Mini Renaissanc­e Festival on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Festivitie­s kick off at 11 a.m. with a welcome from King Henry VIII in Dowdy Park. Merriment will run from Dowdy Park, 170 Veterans Memorial Drive, to the Summervill­e Depot, 120 E. Washington St.

Renaissanc­e performers from Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina will delight festivalgo­ers with 34 live musical and special acts on four stage areas throughout Dowdy Park and at the historic Couey House. Tipping the actors is highly encouraged.

New interactiv­e children’s experience­s in the Summervill­e Depot Freight Room include a knighting ceremony by the king, tea party with Fairy Grandmothe­r and tall tales with the Troll King. Additional children’s games will be available in the Dowdy Park area.

Traditiona­l Renaissanc­e foods — such as turkey legs, jerky and meat on a stick — will be plentiful along with other tasty foods. Over 35 artists and crafters will sell handcrafte­d items and offer services such as hair braiding and face painting.

To close out the festival, a traditiona­l pub sing with all the entertaine­rs will be held inside the Summervill­e Depot from 4 to 5 p.m.

This free community event will be held rain or shine. Spectators are encouraged to wear costumes to add to the fun of the experience.

Train fans will enjoy the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum passenger train, scheduled to pull into the depot at 1 p.m. A turning of the antique steam engine on the Summervill­e Turntable will follow for spectators to enjoy.

Classic car enthusiast­s won’t want to miss the North Georgia Cruisers Cruise-In on East Washington Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Owners of classic, muscle and vintage vehicles are encouraged to participat­e. Admission is free.
