UTC soccer tops UNC Ashville
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team rallied from an early deficit to edge UNC Asheville 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium. Kennedy Garrett scored 8:55 into the match for UNCA, which wound up with a 16-9 advantage in shots, but the Bulldogs (2-3) could not get another one past keepers Lauren Thomas (five saves) and Taylor Mangrum (three saves). Hailey Callis headed in a lofted Hannah Wyatt corner kick for the tying goal at 35:48, and Crystal Mackezyk netted what turned out to be the winner off her own deflected shot at 59:39. That evened the Mocs’ record at 2-2.
Allie White’s goal from a Shelby Meckstruth assist 9:27 into the second half gave Sewanee a 1-1 women’s soccer tie Sunday afternoon at Maryville College. The visiting Tigers (3-0-1) managed four shots in two overtime periods, including one off the post by Baker Walls, and had a 16-13 edge in shots for the game. Olivia Glascoe had six saves for Sewanee, allowing only Siera Siegel’s score at 29:46. Mandy Marshall made 10 saves for the Lady Scots (1-0-1).
St. Olaf beat the Sewanee men’s soccer team 3- 0 Sunday and won the Tigers’ Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational tournament. Kevin Skrip scored midway through the first half and Nick Lund and Aaron Miller added second-half goals for St. Olaf (3-0); Jacob Zalewski made six saves for Sewanee (0-3-2).
FIELD HOCKEY Chelsea Klein scored three times in a 5-0 first half as Centre College beat Sewanee 8-1 in field hockey Sunday at Danville, Ky. The Colonels outshot the visitors 24-8.
GOLF The Tennessee PGA Professional Championship presented by Club Car, Mercedes-Benz and Omega will run today through Wednesday at Westhaven Golf Club in Franklin. The tournament will pay out $40,000 and has 76 entrants, and the six best finishers qualify for the 2014 Professional National Championship next June at The Dunes in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Tennessee tournament has six past champions entered, including 2012 winner Scott Moran.
The Tennessee Golf Association’s 43rd Senior Amateur Championship and Super Senior Amateur are set for Wednesday through Friday at Hillwood Country Club in Nashville. Danny Green of Jackson is the defending senior champion, and Chattanooga-area participants include Mike Jenkins, Tom Baird, Neil Spitalny, Richard Keene, Randall Yoder, Wes Brown, Lex Tarumianz, John Williams, Mike Poe, Matt Nafie, Gerald Burrell, George Lloyd, Jerry Thomas and Jess Voorhies.
RUNNING Berry College senior Ryan James set a meet record by finishing the 8-kilometer course in 26 minutes, 50.60 seconds in the Sewanee Invitational cross country competition Saturday, and teammate Zack Jordan finished seventh, but Centre runners were second through sixth and Emory had the eighth- through 12th-place finishers. Centre won the men’s team title with 20 points, and Emory and Berry were second and third with 50 and 66. Host Sewanee was fifth out of eight teams, and Covenant was sixth. Led by winner Tamara Surtees, Emory won the women’s 6k and Sewanee and Covenant were fourth and sixth. Sewanee’s Parker Gross was 13th and teammate Willow Smith also made the top 20 in the 6k, with Covenant’s Beth Burgess 22nd. Sewanee’s Jason Grimes was 17th in the men’s race.
VOLLEYBALL Carson- Newman junior outside hitter Rachel Harper from Boyd-Buchanan School ranked first in the Carson-Newman Classic this past weekend in points per set and made the five-player all-tournament team after the Lady Eagles went 2-1. Junior setter Kristin Pickett from Cleveland High School had the second-best assist rate of anyone in the event, 8.4 per set.
SPECIAL OLYMPICS
The area Special Olympics bowling tournament for ages 30 and over will be held today at Holiday Bowl Brainerd with all 40 lanes in use and 170 participants. According to Area 4 director Judy Rogers, they will represent Exceptional Enterprises in Grundy County, Keithcare in Hixson, North River Special Friends, Open Arms Care in Ooltewah, Red Bank Independents, Rhea of Sunshine, Special Friends South and Omni Visions Adult Services, Orange Grove Center and Prolex Medical in Chattanooga.
