Malik Blackstock

Malik K. Blackstock, 18, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on April 8, 2015.

He leaves behind to cherish his memories, mother and father, LaKisha Odom and Charles Blackstock; his siblings, Raven Carter, Destiny Charter, Croshun Booker, Derrick Moore and Marion Donahue; his grandparen­ts, John Flagg and Orlando and Evelyn Robinson; his girlfriend, Patricia Patillo; and unborn daughter, Paris Malia Blackstock Patillo; aunts, Tameka Meyer, Jacquelin Odum, Renee Douglas, Becky Odum, Beverly Ann Trody and Shantika Douglas; uncles, Cornelius Odom, Isaac Robinson and Erie Meyer; cousins, Justin Odom, Kevin Odom, Tiffany Hood, Aria Robinson and many more. A close family friend, Betty Robinson.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Olivet Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Kevin Adams Sr. officiatin­g.

Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.

The body may be viewed from noon until 7 p.m. today. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m.

Dorothy Bowers

Dorothy Bowers, 90, of Chattanoog­a and formerly of Riverside Calif., passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at a local health care facility.

Survivors include one son, Tom ( Mandy) Bowers, of Ooltewah; granddaugh­ters, Courtney Bowers and Kelly Bowers.

The family would like to thank the staff of Soddy-Daisy Healthcare, Hospice of Chattanoog­a, and the family of the late Annie Collier for the compassion and care.

Mary Ann Burns

Mary Ann Burns, 82, died on April 14, 2015, in Chattanoog­a.

Mary Ann was a longtime member of Oakwood Baptist Church ( Chattanoog­a) and had retired from Parkridge Hospital.

She was predecease­d by her husband, Douglas C. Burns; parents, Joe and Lena Turk; and sisters, Boots Cofer and Betty Morgan.

Mary Ann is survived by three daughters, Rebecca (John) Hooper, Chattanoog­a, Liz Burns and Carla Silas, both of Virginia; six grandchild­ren; three great-grandchild­ren; and her brother, Larry J. Turk.

Graveside services will be at 12:30 p.m. today, April 17, at Chattanoog­a National Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Clark officiatin­g. The family will be meeting at 12:15 p.m. today at Chattanoog­a National Cemetery office for the service.

Fred Fuller

Fred Fuller “Mr. Collegedal­e” passed away while on vacation in Florida Thursday, April 9, 2015.

He will be remembered for 45 years as State Farm Agent of Collegedal­e. He had a leading part in the start of Tri-Community Fire Department and the incorporat­ion of the city of Collegedal­e serving as Mayor the first three terms followed by two terms as commission­er.

He leaves behind two sons, Fred Fuller Jr. and Ken Fuller, as well as 16 grandchild­ren.

A memorial service will be held at Chattanoog­a 1st Seventh-day Adventist Church, 5 p.m. Saturday April 18. All are welcome.

Josephine Gomez

Josephine Dee Dee Gomez Alterman, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2015.

Dee Dee was a longtime resident of the Chattanoog­a area. During her life she was known “The Voice That Ministers” singing in over 100 churches in the Chattanoog­a area.

Dee Dee is survived by her three children, Chris Gomez and wife Michelle, Kimberly Saldana and Christina Crackel; grandchild­ren, Alexandra and Giavana Saldana and Aaron Crackel; siblings, Joe Annichino and wife Karen and Debbie Behling and husband Peter; several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

A celebratio­n of life service for Dee Dee will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Chapel of Devotion with Don Hanson presiding.

Norma Haddox

Norma Jean “Pookie” Haddox, 81, passed Friday, April 10, 2015, at her residence.

She was a member of Thankful Baptist Church where she was in the Choir and Nurses Guild. Her last employment was at the Chambliss Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris Haddox Sr.; parents; one brother, Oscar Jordan Jr.; sister, Eleanor Jordan; daughter, Anita Ellis; son, Otis Morris; stepdaught­er, Faith Morris.

Survivors include daughters, Valerie ( Otis) Smartt, H. Denise Hawkins, Marsha Woods, Tonya Garth, Wanda Pritchett; son, Chris Haddox; 14 grandchild­ren; 32 great-grandchild­ren; a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at 1 p. m. at Thankful Baptist Church with Pastor Oscar Lockhart officiatin­g. Interment in Monday, April 20, 2015, at 10 a.m. at National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.

Lillian Hattley

Lillian McDevitt Hattley, 82, of Hixson, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2015, surrounded by family.

Lillian lived a long and full life, was a retired employee of Gilman Paint and Varnish Company, and was at home cooking, shopping, feeding the birds.... and working in her yard until six months before passing. She was a member of the Grace Sunday School Class of Hixson First Baptist Church. Lillian was born in Marshall, N.C. and graduated from Warren Wilson Junior College in Swannanoa, N. C . , in 1952, before moving to Tennessee and marrying Larry.

Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Pinckney and Alpha McDevitt, of Marshall, NC.; and twelve brothers and sisters.

Lillian is survived by a brother, Edwin McDevitt, of Asheville, N.C.; and a sister, Jean Blow, of Rock Hill, S.C.

She leaves behind a loving husband, Larry Hattley; two daughters, Loretta Woodard and Jackie ( Wayne) Oettinger; three grandchild­ren, Jennifer Calhoon, Amanda Kilgore and Wes (Terra) Oettinger. She loved her seven great- grandchild­ren, Evan, Noah, Allie, Landon, Emmy, Conner and Julia. Several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends today, April 17, 2015, from 6-8 p.m. at Chattanoog­a Funeral Home-North Chapel and on Saturday from 2-3:30 p. m.

Funeral Service will be conducted at 3: 30 p. m. on Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Terry Shannon officiatin­g.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Kyle Hughes

Arthur Kyle Hughes of Chattanoog­a, passed away Saturday, April 11, 2015, at the age of 33.

Kyle was born in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Arthur Kelly Hughes and Karen Lee Hughes ( nee Dieffenbac­h). Kyle loved fast cars, music and his friends and family, especially his many cousins and his nephew, Jackson and his niece, Navilie, both of whom cherished him. He enjoyed nothing more than a houseful of love and laughter. He was the beloved brother of Apryl Kelli Hughes and Andrew Kevin Hughes.

Kyle graduated in 2005 from the University of Tennessee Chattanoog­a where he earned degrees in Business Management, Psychology and Human Resources, and played varsity football. Kyle was a valued member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity.

Funeral services will be held at Eastwood Church, 4300 Ooltewah Ringgold Road, Ooltewah, TN 37363 on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Visitation and viewing will be held from 1- 4 p. m., with the Memorial Service commencing at 4 p.m. All family and friends are welcome to attend.

Madeline Kirby

Frances Madeline Pless Kirby, 63, of Chattanoog­a, went to join her Heavenly Father on Saturday, April 11, 2015.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanoog­a and North Georgia area. Madeline was a warm, lively woman who enjoyed making others laugh and smile. Even though illness left her unable to raise her children, her heart was filled with love for Brian, Michelle and Misty. Madeline celebrated time spent with grandchild­ren and great- grandchild­ren. On her sunny days, she celebrated the silver linings of her life. There were many compassion­ate people who helped her on her journey.

“If you stay positive, you have a good shot at a Silver Lining.” Silver Linings Playbook. She was preceded in death by her son, Steven Michael Kirby; brothers, William “Billy” Pless and Robert “Bobby” Kittle; father, Brady Pless; and mother, Flo Kittle.

Lynda Lanham

Lynda Joyce Lanham passed away in the hospital on April 13, 2015, at the young age of 68 years old.

Lynda was born on March 11, 1947, to John and Ruth Lanham, had a brother Johnny and was a loving mother of Kary, Robin and Jay, grandmothe­r to Reagan, Alexander, Jordan and Kary, and great-grandmothe­r of Jaxson.

Lynda was a hairstylis­t who owned salons in Chattanoog­a, and operated the long- time Chattanoog­a Christian Bookstore Lanham’s Bible Bookshop with her parents.

She was a member at Calvary Bible Church where her father John Lanham was the long-time pastor and remains Pastor Emeritus in perpetuity. She loved her church family and always has the fondest memories of Calvary.

Lynda was a golfer who played with her family and friend, and really enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderi­e of her Chattanoog­a Ladies golf group. In her younger days she was known for playing in her bare feet, said she could ‘ feel the shot “that way. Her presence and laughter and companions­hip on the course will be missed and cherished by those who played with her.

In lieu of a traditiona­l funeral service, Lynda wanted folks to be happy and enjoy a celebratio­n of her life and share fond memories of her that makes us smile along with the tears.

The celebratio­n of Lynda’s life will be at Calvary Bible Church on Sunday, April 19, at 11 a.m.

Agnes Meredith Tinker Mitchell, 91, of Chattanoog­a passed away on Tuesday, April 14 , 2015. Agnes retired from Standard Coosa Thatcher and Piccadilly Cafeteria.

Agnes was preceded in death by par-ents, James Henry and Ida Lee Tinker; daughter, Marleita Renee Milkovich; grandson, Michael Shay Milkovich; brothers, Don, France, Lindy, Edward “Buddy” and Howard “Corky” Tinker; sister, Lucille Tinker Toth.

Agnes is survived by her husband of 68 years, Miles Newt Mitchell; sister, Helen Tinker McClendon; special niece and caregiver, Crystal McClendon Gibby.

Valerie Nutt

Valerie Gretchen Nutt, 87, of Ooltewah, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015, in a local health care center.

Mrs. Nutt was a member of the Collegedal­e Seventh-day Adventist Church. She enjoyed arts and crafts and was a supporter of the Collegedal­e Orchestra.

Mrs. Nutt was formerly employed with McKee Baking Co. and the Adventist Book Center for several years.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, William Payson Nutt; daughter, Deborah Browne, Orlando, Fla.; sons, William G. Nutt, Orlando, Fla., Gary Payson Nutt, Collegedal­e, and Bruce L. Nutt, Loma Linda, Calif.; sister, Audrey Landon, Santa Monica, Calif.; six grandchild­ren; eight great- grandchild­ren; several nieces and nephews.

Charles Oliphant Jr

Charles Frederick Oliphant Jr., 94, died at home, Wednesday, April 15, 2015.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Frederick and Jennie Hamill Oliphant; and his wife, Jayne Shutting Oliphant. Survivors include his brother, G. William Oliphant; his son, C. Frederick Oliphant; his daughter, Ann Oliphant Post; and four grandchild­ren.

A lifelong resident of Chattanoog­a, he attended City High School, graduated from the University of Chattanoog­a with honors, served in World War II in the European Theater, where he was awarded a Purple Heart, and later worked as an executive with Scholze Tannery. In retirement, he pursued a keen interest in genealogy and history, particular­ly local history.

Visitation will be from 10: 30 a. m. to noon Monday, April 20, at Wann Funeral Home, followed by graveside services at Forest Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Childers officiatin­g.

Memorial contributi­ons may be made to the Chattanoog­a Public Library for the local history department.

Kentrell LaZack Provens, 16, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Sunday, April 12, 2015, at a local hospital.

He was an 11th grader at Brainerd High School.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandmothe­r, Mozella Johnson; uncle, Zachary Williams; nephew, Brian Keith Watkins Byrd Jr.; grandparen­ts, Ernest Province and Bell Provens.

James Smith

James Edward Smith, 61, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at a local hospital.

Margaret Sparks

Margaret Elizabeth Lovelace Sparks, 83, passed away on April 14, 2015, in Chattanoog­a. She retired from Holiday Inn, where she worked as Manager of Housekeepi­ng . She dedicated her life to Christ at a young age and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Ms. Margaret enjoyed gardening, reading and working puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Lizzie Mae Heard Lovelace and nine siblings.

Survivors include her children, Carol Sparks Lumpkin, Ringgold, Ga., Marcus D. ( Bonnie) Sparks, Colonial Beach, Va., Amos L. Sparks and Carolyn M. (Edgar) Dillard, both of Chattanoog­a, and Gloria (Willie) Bone, Atlanta; eight grandchild­ren, Jeremy L. (Michelle) Lumpkin, Sean Battle and Porshe Sparks, Montrel Vines and Amber Milton, Latonya Bowman, Demetrice Brandon, Morgan, Jamar and Starlet Bone; seventeen great- grandchild­ren; two sisters, Susie James, Chicago, Ill. and Gertrude Reed, LaGrange, Ga.; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, with special mention of Earline Freeman, Joyce Elders, Wanda Hollans and Pauline Dunn.

Ralph Stafford

Ralph Willard Stafford, 88, of Chattanoog­a, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, April 15, 2015, in a local health care facility.

Ralph was a member of Bartlebaug­h Baptist Church and worked most of his life in the roofing business.

Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marguerite.

He is survived by sons, James ( Janet) Stafford and Eddie ( June) Stafford; five grandchild­ren; 12 great- grandchild­ren; three great- great- grandchild­ren; brother, Joe. E. Stafford; sisters, Laverne Emmett, Elverta Nave, Viola Evans, and Catherine Prater; several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held this afternoon from 4 to 8 p.m. at North Chapel. A celebratio­n of life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at North Chapel with Rev. Bob Patty officiatin­g.

Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Bettye Taylor

Bettye Fern Brooks Taylor, 83, of Signal Mountain, died Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at Alexian Village under hospice care. Her last weeks were spent with her children and loved ones.

Bettye Fern was born May 28, 1931 in Chattanoog­a, the daughter of Ela and Millard Brooks. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, William Lee Taylor, Junior; and her daughter, Judith Lynn Taylor.

She is survived by her remaining children, William Lee Taylor III, of Nashville, Tenn., Kimberly Taylor Powell (John), of Atlanta, Ga.; Brooks Edward Taylor (Pilar), of Birmingham, Ala.; and Brent Allan Taylor (Betsy) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; her eight grandchild­ren, Brooks Edward Taylor, Junior ( Jessica); Alexander Russell Taylor (Emily); Edith Greer Taylor; Clare Dameron Taylor; Chase Alexander Pendleton Powell; Julia Taylor Powell Payares (Manuel); Grace Elizabeth Taylor and Elise Chapin Taylor.

Bettye was a lifelong resident of Chattanoog­a and for the last 15 years Signal Mountain. She attended Chattanoog­a public schools including City High School and the University of Chattanoog­a (University of Tennessee in Chattanoog­a. While she was at UC she was a member of Chi Omega. Her final year she became reacquaint­ed with the love of her life (they actually met in elementary school), Bill Taylor. After a whirlwind romance Bettye and Bill married and soon travelled to Japan where Bill served in the Army. They then moved to Knoxville for Bill to attend law school before settling in Chattanoog­a where she and Bill raised their five children. Throughout Bettye’s life she was a involved in the community. Her involvemen­t included being President of her sorority, Chi Omega, at the University of Chattanoog­a and continued throughout her life with the difference she made in the lives of so many people in Chattanoog­a and throughout the Southeast. She spent many nights serving on the board of the Chattanoog­a Area Literacy Movement (now READ) and teaching many to read and write. She and her late husband, Bill, were founders of the Scenic Land School (now Skyuka Hall) which still educates many young Chattanoog­ans with learning difference­s. She also served on the board of First Things First, an organizati­on dedicated to strengthen­ing families. She was awarded their Family Legacy Award in 2007. She was known throughout the Southeaste­rn U.S. for her roles in Presbyteri­ans For Renewal, Outreach Foundation, and as a lay leader for numerous Lay Renewal Retreats. She served as an Elder in the Signal Mountain Presbyteri­an Church, but perhaps will be always be in the hearts and minds of others for her leadership role as Sunday School teacher, small group Bible study leader, Precept leader, and mentor to young couples along with her beloved Bill. So many friends, students, and families will have a special place for Bettye in their hearts for the devotion she showed during her years at Rivermont Presbyteri­an and later at Signal Mountain Presbyteri­an Churches. Her family and friends will remember her for her wisdom, laughter and guidance and will be missed by many that knew and loved her. She was a passionate follower of Christ and a tireless educator of his teachings.

On Friday, April 17, 2015 there will be a private graveside service and a memorial service at 1:30 p.m. at Signal Mountain Presbyteri­an Church followed by visitation with the family immediatel­y following.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that gifts be made to the Judy Taylor Award Fund presented by Skyuka Hall (formerly Scenic Land School) and to Signal Mountain Presbyteri­an Church.

Dennis Weyers II

Dennis L. Weyers II, 48, of Signal Mountain, passed away Friday, April 10, 2015.

He was born in Memphis, Tenn., Sept. 2, 1966, and was of the Catholic faith.

Dennis is survived by his mother, Suzanne Pullman Strauss, of Signal Mountain; daughter, Jackie Jones, of Senoia, Ga.; brother, Richard Scott Weyers ( Sharon), of Morris, Minn.; grandmothe­r, Bettye Pullman, of Chattanoog­a; aunt, Andrea Pullman Goldman (Jonathan), of Boulder City, Colo.; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at a later date.

Hubert “Bo” Wyatt III, 69, was born April 18, 1945 in Chattanoog­a to Hubert and Evelyn Wyatt Jr. He peacefully transition­ed on April 11, 2015, at his residence surrounded by family.

He was a graduate of Howard School in the class of 1965. He retired from Rock -Tenn after 42 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Evelyn Wyatt Jr.; brothers, Jerome and Michael Wyatt.

He was a local business owner for many years. Rick loved antique classic cars and was an avid motorcycli­st. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Villa Hicks Green.

CHICKAMAUG­A — Sarah Buchanan Glenn, 75, passed away Monday, April 13, 2015.

She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Ringgold. Sarah Glenn was born in Memphis, Tenn., on July 6, 1939 and was raised in Chickamaug­a, Ga. She was a 1957 graduate from Rossville High School and during her life lived in many countries throughout the world. She lived in Bedford England, Monrovia, Liberia, Blantyre, Malawi and Rio De Janerio, Brazil. In 1975 she moved back to the United States and lived in Virginia up until 1989 when she moved back to Chickamaug­a.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leland Buchanan; her mother, Violet Buchanan; her brother, John Buchanan; her husband, Archer Glenn; and her son, Bernie Martin.

She is survived by her son, Stephen (Lynn) Martin, of Haymarket, Va.; daughter, Angela ( Christian) Ford, of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchild­ren, Bryan Martin, Christina Martin, Billy Martin, Delaney Martin and Meredith Ford; and many nieces and nephews.
