The Citadel tops Coastal Carolina 41-38,

CONWAY, S.C. — Dominique Allen rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns and Eric Goins kicked a 43-yard field goal with no time left to lift The Citadel over Coastal Carolina, 41-38, in an FCS first-round playoff game Saturday.

The Citadel (9-3) recorded its first FCS playoff win since 1992, rolling up 524 yards on 78 rushes.

With the score tied at 28 entering the fourth quarter, a 49-yard field goal from Goins and Shy Phillips’ 32-yard intercepti­on return for a score gave the Bulldogs a 10-point lead. But Coastal Carolina tied it again with 5:38 left when Osharmar Abercrombi­e broke three tackles and rumbled 16 yards for a touchdown.

Goins had a chance to put The Citadel ahead on the next possession, but his 47-yard attempt was blocked.

Coastal Carolina (9-3) looked to take the lead on the ensuing drive, but Tevin Floyd’s stripsack of Alex Ross, which Mitchell Jeter recovered, set the Bulldogs up for the winning score.

Western Illinois 24, Dayton 7 DAYTON, Ohio — Nikko Watson ran for 152 yards and a touchdown and Western Illinois beat Dayton.

Dayton scored on Alex Jeske’s 5-yard run in the first quarter, but the Flyers turned the ball over three times in the red zone in the first half after having just one red-zone turnover all season.

Watson tied the game on a 7-yard run seven plays after the first of three Jeske intercepti­ons. Nathan Knuffman kicked a 27-yard field goal 11 seconds before halftime.

Sean McGuire threw touchdown passes of 22 and 9 yards to Lance Lenoir and Stacey Smith, respective­ly, in the second half. McGuire threw for 183 yards and was intercepte­d twice.

Montana 24, South Dakota State 17 MISSOULA, Mont. — Brady Gustafson threw for two touchdowns as the Grizzlies held off South Dakota State.

Gustafson threw for 202 yards to spark Montana (8-4) to a 24-0 halftime lead.

The Grizzlies head to four-time national champion North Dakota State for a quarterfin­al game next Saturday. Montana beat NDSU 38-35 in Missoula in September.

Gustafson had scoring passes of 4 yards to Jamaal Jones and 26 yards to Ellis Henderson as Montana took a 14-0 lead at 10:42 of the second quarter. Jeremy Calhoun added a short scoring run for the Grizzlies.

Colgate 27, New Hampshire 20 DURHAM, N.H. — James Holland rushed for a career-high four touchdowns as Colgate defeated New Hampshire.

Colgate will meet fifth-seeded James Madison (9-2) next Saturday.

Holland carried 23 times for 95 yards and put the Raiders (8-4) on the board early with a 6-yard TD run. He added another, this time from the 1, in the second quarter for a 12-3 lead. Kicker Jonah Bowman’s first PAT kick slid to the right, ending a 34-for-34 streak. His second was blocked.

Holland’s first TD was set up after Chris Morgan recovered a New Hampshire fumble — the first of three turnovers — on the Wildcats’ (7-5) opening drive. Holland scored twice after halftime, his fourth touchdown giving Colgate a 27-6 lead.

New Hampshire’s Sean Goldrich threw a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Rory Donovan and ran for another, closing the gap to 27-20. He was intercepte­d with 3:33 remaining.

Sam Houston St. 42, Southern Utah 39 HUNTSVILLE, Texas — Jeremiah Briscoe threw for 211 yards, including the winning 55-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, to lift the Bearkats over Southern Utah.

Ridgeway Frank piled up 137 yards rushing on 29 carries and had two touchdowns, Corey Avery also ran for two TDs and Trenier Orr returned an intercepti­on for another score for Sam Houston State (9-3), which trailed 32-26 at the break.

The winning TD throw to Yedidiah Louis came with 3:44 left. Southern Utah (8-4) drove to midfield but gave up the ball on downs, then fumbled on its final possession. The Bearkats recovered it with 47 seconds remaining and ran out the clock. They will play McNeesse State on Saturday.

Northern Iowa 53, Eastern Illinois 17 CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Aaron Bailey threw for three touchdowns and Tyvis Smith rushed for 147 yards and a score to lead Northern Iowa to a win over Eastern Illinois.

Bailey threw only 11 passes, completing seven for 162 yards.

Northern Iowa (8-4) plays at sixth-seeded Portland State in the second round.

Northern Iowa broke the game open in the second quarter as Michael Schmadeke kicked three of his four field goals, Bailey hit Daurice Fountain for a 32-yard score and Smith scored on a 1-yard run for a 23-7 lead.

Bailey connected with Charles Brown on a 52-yard score and Fountain for 41 yards when Northern Iowa built the lead to 43-17 after three quarters.

Ray Buchanan Jr. added a 70-yard intercepti­on return to close it out.

William & Mary 52, Duquesne 49 WILLIAMSBU­RG, Va. — Steve Cluley threw three touchdown passes to DeVonte Dedmon, Kendell Anderson added two rushing scores and William & Mary beat Duquesne.

Up 31-24, William & Mary’s Tyler Claytor blocked a 24-yard field goal and gave way to DeAndre Houston-Carson to scoop it up and race for a 65-yard touchdown.

In the fourth, Duquesne recovered a fumble but Dillon Buechel threw an intercepti­on on its next play. Two plays later, William & Mary fumbled again and Austin Crimmins made a 35-yard field goal to cut Duquesne’s deficit to 45-41. But Anderson’s 8-yard touchdown run made it 52-41.
