HOW THEY SCORED

-

KNOXVILLE — Staff writer Patrick Brown reviews the scoring plays from Tennessee’s 53-28 win against Vanderbilt on Saturday:

FIRST QUARTER

UT — Von Pearson 17-yard pass from Josh Dobbs (Aaron Medley kick), 11:32 Drive: 5 plays, 56 yards, 1:41 Key plays: Tennessee scored its sixth opening-drive touchdown of the season with relative ease. Dobbs threw a dart to Josh Smith for 12 yards, and Alvin Kamara took a swing pass 18 yards, hurdling some defenders at the end of the play. On the touchdown, Dobbs faked a swing pass and hit a wideopen Pearson.

TENNESSEE 7, VANDERBILT 0

UT — Aaron Medley 26-yard field goal, 6:01 Drive: 9 plays, 56 yards, 3:15 Key plays: Two plays after misfiring on a potential big gainer to Kamara, Dobbs checked the ball down to Jalen Hurd, and the running back picked up 14 yards on third-and-9. The quarterback then ran for 25 yards on a draw play after dropping the snap. Vanderbilt’s quality red-zone defense got the stop after the Vols had second-and-3 at the 5-yard line, though.

TENNESSEE 10, VANDERBILT 0

VU — Darrius Sims 7-yard run (Tommy Openshaw kick), 4:50 Drive: 3 plays, 70 yards, 1:05 Key plays: Vanderbilt running back Ralph Webb burst through a seam on the left side of the line and into the open field, dragged Justin Martin about 10 yards and broke free from the Tennessee cornerback before Darrin Kirkland chased him down. An unsportsmanlike-conduct flag on LaDarrell McNeil made it first-and-goal at the 10, and Sims scored two plays later.

TENNESSEE 10, VANDERBILT 7

UT — Dobbs 6-yard run (Medley kick), 2:01 Drive: 8 plays, 66 yards, 2:40 Key plays: After hitting Pearson for 18 yards, Dobbs scrambled for 22 yards to convert on third-and-8 at the 43-yard line, but the biggest play of the drive was a pass-interference penalty on cornerback Torren McGaster on third down at the 21. Dobbs ran it in on the next play.

TENNESSEE 17, VANDERBILT 7

SECOND QUARTER

VU — Trent Sherfield 12-yard pass from Kyle Shurmur (Openshaw kick), 14:50 Drive: 6 plays, 80 yards, 2:05 Key plays: On the final play of the first quarter, Caleb Scott made an impressive diving catch between two defenders on a beautiful throw from Shurmur. Sims had a touchdown run wiped out by a holding penalty, but Shurmur hit Sherfield on a back-shoulder throw for the touchdown a play later.

TENNESSEE 17, VANDERBILT 14

UT — Medley 47-yard field goal, 12:57 Drive: 7 plays, 30 yards, 1:47 Key plays: Kamara burst up the middle for a 17-yard gain into Vanderbilt territory three plays into the drive. After the Vols stalled at the Vandy 30, Medley kicked his career-long field goal. His previous best was 46 yards at Georgia last season.

TENNESSEE 20, VANDERBILT 14

UT — Cameron Sutton 85-yard punt return (Medley kick), 4:36 Key plays: Everyone in the stadium assumed Sutton’s second punt-return touchdown of the season was coming back with a flag lying on

the ground 60-plus yards from the end zone, but the penalty was on Vanderbilt and Sutton’s score stood.

TENNESSEE 27, VANDERBILT 14

THIRD QUARTER

UT — Shurmur sacked in end zone by Derek Barnett for a safety, 9:47 Key plays: Vanderbilt stopped the Vols on fourth-and-goal at the 1, but Tennessee’s defense took advantage of the field position. On third down, Barnett came free on an inside twist with a defensive tackle and sacked Shurmur for two points. It was Tennessee’s first safety since Curt Maggitt forced one against North Carolina State in the 2012 opener in Atlanta.

TENNESSEE 29, VANDERBILT 14

UT — Jalen Hurd 14-yard run (Medley kick), 7:33 Drive: 6 plays, 49 yards, 2:05 Key plays: Tennessee had good field position after Micah Abernathy’s 26-yard return of a free kick following the safety, and Kamara ran the Vols into scoring position with an 11-yard gain. Another pass-interference flag on Vanderbilt, this one on Taurean Ferguson, kept Tennessee’s drive alive, and Hurd broke through a seam to score on the next play.

TENNESSEE 36, VANDERBILT 14

UT — Pearson 5-yard pass from Dobbs (Medley kick), 3:41 Drive: 4 plays, 62 yards, 1:25 Key plays: Hurd broke through the line and into open field for a 48-yard gain. It was the sophomore’s longest career run and put him past the 100-yard mark for the game. On third-and-goal at the 5 three plays later, Dobbs rolled to his right and hit Pearson for the duo’s second touchdown of the game.

TENNESSEE 43, VANDERBILT 14

FOURTH QUARTER

UT — Medley 32-yard field goal, 13:17 Drive: 10 plays, 52 yards, 3:45 Key plays: Kamara and Hurd had runs of 13 and 16 yards, and Hurd converted a third down into a first after catching a short pass from Dobbs. That set up Medley’s third field goal of the game.

TENNESSEE 46, VANDERBILT 14

UT — Joe Young 8-yard run (George Bullock kick), 8:06 Drive: 7 plays, 71 yards, 2:59 Key plays: Freshman backup quarterback Quinten Dormady led a fourth-quarter TD drive. Ralph David Abernathy turned a short pass into a 17-yard gain, and Kamara did the same for 36 yards to set up Young for the first touchdown of his career.

TENNESSEE 53, VANDERBILT 14

VU — Steven Scheu 3-yard pass from Shurmur (Openshaw kick), 4:01 Drive: 10 plays, 66 yards, 3:54 Key plays: Webb broke free for a 20-yard gain to open the drive, and a pass-interference penalty on Emmanuel Moseley on third down kept the drive alive for the Commodores, who scored when Shurmur threw to his tight end.

TENNESSEE 53, VANDERBILT 21

UT — Dallas Rivers 8-yard pass from Shurmur (Openshaw kick), 0:22 Drive: 9 plays, 68 yards, 1:23 Key plays: Sherfield made a great catch and got a foot inbounds along the sideline for a 35-yard gain to set up another garbage-time score for Vanderbilt.
