Gaynell Beasley

Gaynell Beasley, 50, formally of Chattanoog­a, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2016, in Huntsville, Ala.

She lived life on her own terms.

She was preceded in death by the late Luvenia Stamper; husband; and brother.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her sons, Orlandus Stamper, Antonio Mason and Jamil Beasley; sisters, Tanda Martin and Yolanda Stamper; brother, Courtland Stamper; four grandchild­ren; uncle, Jeroboam (Stella) Stamper Sr., of Cedartown, Ga.; and a host of neices; nephews; cousins; and friends.

Funeral is Thursday, March 17, 2016, at 1 p.m. in Advantage chapel.

Burial in Highland Cemetery.

The body will lie in state today, from 1-7 p.m.

Ulas Benton, 77, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at his residence.

Eloise Dodson

Eloise Pennington Dodson, 88, of Hixson, passed away March 14, 2016. She was a loving mother, grandmothe­r and dedicated homemaker. She was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Leota Moore Pennington.

Survivors include her loving husband of 59 years, Robert Dodson; sons, Jeff (Lara) Dodson and Kevin Dodson; sisters, Delores West (Earle) and Faye Shook; 11 grandchild­ren, Britton, Jordan, Kaitlyn, Courtney, Christian, Jeffery, Madeleine, Gretchen, Harrison, Autumn, and Reagan; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2016, at 2 p.m., EST, at the New Salem United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jodie Ihfe officiatin­g.

Burial will follow in Hawkins Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday, from 4- 8 p. m., EST, at the Trenton Chapel of Moore Funeral Home.

Lula Eller

Lula Mell Eller, of Crossville and formerly of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2016, in Sparta, Tenn.

A native of Scottsboro, Ala., Mrs. Eller was a daughter of the late Louis and Minnie Olinger.

She was of the Baptist faith and had worked for Lovemans of Chattanoog­a with nine years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by husbands, J.C. Downs and Len Eller; and two sisters, Winifred Gilbert and Hazel Willis.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Ann) Downs of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter and son-inlaw, Deborah ( Jim) Downs of Crossville, Tenn.; sister, Helen Woods of Chattanoog­a; three granddaugh­ters; two great- granddaugh­ters; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. EDT, Thursday, March 17, 2016, at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Hixson, with Rev. Roger DeHart officiatin­g.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Gene Ellis

Gene M. Ellis, of Red Bank, died Monday, March 14, 2016. She was 93 years old.

She was the widow of Glenn W. Ellis, Jr. They were married for 62 years, until his death in March 2005.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William E. ( Christine) May; and her sister, Dr. Rosemary M. Kent.

Gene retired from the Walker County Department of Education after teaching art at Rossville Jr. High School for many years.

She graduated from The University of Chattanoog­a, where she held a music scholarshi­p. She played the violin in The University Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Arthur Plettner. She also played in the Senior Neighbors Orchestra for seven years.

Gene was a member of the DAR Nancy Ward Chapter and the Huguenots Society.

She was a member of the Second Presbyteri­an church for 73 years. In later years, Gene and Glenn changed to Red Bank Cumberland Presbyteri­an to be closer to home.

Gene is survived by daughters, Janet Ellis Bean and Kimberly Ellis Tyler; son-in-law, Thomas Edward Tyler; grandchild­ren, Zachary Ellis Tyler and Alison Bean Van Winkle and husband Devin; as well as two great-grandchild­ren.

Memorial services are at 5 p.m. with visitation starting at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at Red Bank Cumberland Presbyteri­an Church, with Rev. James Buttram, Jr. officiatin­g.

A graveside service will be in Chattanoog­a National Cemetery March 23, 2016, at 12:30 p.m.

Louis Fore

Louis Fore, 97, of Apison, died Monday, March 14, 2016, at his residence.

Born April 16, 1918, in Bremen, Ind., he was a member of Apison Seventh Day Adventist Church and was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lydia.

Survivors are his sons, Jerry and James; five grandchild­ren; and six great-grandchild­ren.

A private burial will be at Collegedal­e Memorial Park.

Lee Godfrey

Leland Buell “Lee” Godfrey, Jr., 78, went to live with our Lord and Savior on Monday, March 14, 2016.

He was born in Atlanta, Ga. and moved to Signal Moun - tain in the third grade. He was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyteri­an Church, where he served as a deacon, and attended the Journey Sunday School Class.

Lee graduated from The Baylor School in 1955 and the University of Chattanoog­a in 1959 with a degree in business. He serviced three years in the U.S. Army after receiving a commission through R.O.T.C., and several years in the Army National Guard. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Lee spent 41 years in the Portland Cement industry retiring from Signal Mountain Cement.

Lee was a member of Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club and an avid golfer. He was a three time President of the Mocs Club and loved UTC sports.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Leland B. Godfrey Sr. and Margaret G. Godfrey; and a son, Scott Leland Godfrey.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years and childhood sweetheart, Emily C. Godfrey; one brother, Edward W. Godfrey and his wife Suzanne, of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Dr. Andrew G. Godfrey and his wife Gwen, of Simpsonvil­le, S.C.; and two grandchild­ren, Danielle and Grayson Godfrey.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Signal Mountain Presbyteri­an Church, with Dr. William Dudley and Rev. Margaret Ferguson officiatin­g.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

Samuel Halbrook

Samuel J. Halbrook, 71, of Tampa, Fla., passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2016, in a health care facility in Snellville, Ga.

Sam was a fun loving guy, always looking for adventure; who loved fishing, bicycling, disc golfing, and hiking with relatives and friends.

He was an Air Traffic Controller in Vietnam and in Jacksonvil­le, Fla. for many years.

He will be sadly missed by a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Merris and Drefus Halbrook; sister, Shirley Hancock; and dear aunt, Vina Tanner, all of Tampa, Fla.

Survivors include a brother, David (Patty) Halbrook, of Gainesvill­e, Ga.; sister, Patsy( Tom) Reno, of Ooltewah; many nieces; and nephews, of Tampa,. Fla., Cumming,Ga. and Ooltewah.

A graveside memorial will be held, with full military honors on April 1, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Georia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributi­ons may be made the Autism Society of Georgia, where lies his heart.

John Hawkins

John C. Hawkins, 89, of Chattanoog­a, fell asleep in death on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, in a local healthcare facility.

Funeral is today at noon in the chapel of Taylor Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Jones as the eulogist. Burial in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Kenneth Heiss

On March 14, 2016, at 11:36 p.m., after a year long battle with cancer, The Lord Jesus Christ called Kenneth J. Heiss, of Soddy- Daisy, Tenn., to his heavenly home.

Kenneth was born in Chattanoog­a on Sept. 3, 1951. He was married on Nov. 24, 1972, at Flat Top Independen­t Church to his loving wife of 44 years, Joy Levengood Heiss.

He graduated from Soddy-Daisy High School in 1969. Kenneth worked at E.I. Dupont for 12 years before he transferre­d to Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C., where he worked for 22 years. Kenneth retired from the Savannah River Site at age 54 in 2005. He then returned to his first most loved home of Flat Top Mountain. Kenneth became a Christian at age 25, when he surrendere­d his sin to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. He worked each day to spread the gospel of Jesus to as many people as he could. In 1989, he was ordained a Deacon at Spring Branch Baptist Church in Windsor, South Carolina. In 1999, Kenneth was licensed to be a minister, also at Spring Branch Baptist Church.

Kenneth is survived by his wife, Joy Levengood Heiss; son, Kenneth Allen (Jamie) Heiss; daughter, Kathy (Charles) Culver; four grandchild­ren, Payton Brooke Heiss, Remington Blake Heiss, Ty Ellis Culver and Ayden Grant Culver; siblings, Janice Francisco, Denise Heiss, Sandra (John) Flerl and Paul (Martina) Heiss; brother-in-law, Milford Bowman, Jr.; several nieces; nephews; great nieces; and great nephews.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis and Dora (Reed) Heiss; sister, Stevetta Heiss Bowman; and brotherin-law, Marvin Francisco.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Bowman Cemetery, with Brother Rocky Bradford officiatin­g.

Bettye Holloway

Bettye June Eberhardt Holloway, 78, departed this life on Friday, March 11, 2016, at her home surrounded by family and friends. She was born May 24, 1937. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arless Holloway; parents, Callie Eberhardt and George Smith; grandparen­ts, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel (Willie) Eberhardt and Emma Smith; father and mother-inlaw, Mr. and Mrs. John (Lillie) Holloway; aunt, Arie Harris; and granddaugh­ter, Deja’ Holloway.

Bettye was a devoted and longtime member of Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. She was educated in the Chattanoog­a City Public School system, graduating from Howard High School in 1955. In 1960 she received her B.S. degree in Tailoring and Design from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, and received her Master’s degree in Education (Reading Specialist) in 1983. She retired from the Chattanoog­a City Public School system after dedicating 30 plus years to teaching and educating children.

She was also a 58 year member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Ms. Karen V. Rhodes, of Chattanoog­a; two sons, Arless Derek (Tanya) Holloway, of Upper Marlboro, Md.; Dwayne K. (Darnella) Holloway, of Murfreesbo­ro, Tenn.; six grandchild­ren, Justin D. Holloway, of Upper Marlboro, Md.; Venita Rhodes, of Murfreesbo­ro, Tenn.; Robin Rhodes,of Chattanoog­a; Dezman, Donovan, and Daryn Holloway, all of Murfreesbo­ro, Tenn.; in-laws Fred D. (Hazel) Holloway, Lareen, AZ, Johnny D. (Juanita) Holloway, Atheria ( Edward) Freeman, William Holloway, all of Chattanoog­a; and a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.

A funeral service will be held at Second Missionary Baptist Church at 2305 East 3rd St. at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 17, 2016, with Dr. Ernest L. Reid Jr. officiatin­g. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon today, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Ivy Beyond the Wall Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m.

John Marsh

John Douglas Marsh, 87, of Soddy Daisy, died Monday, March 14, 2016, in a local Hospice Care Center.

A native of Dayton, Tenn., Mr. Marsh was a longtime resident of Hamilton County and was retired from the IBEW Local 175 after 50 years of service.

He was a member of the Worley Lodge F&AM, the Alhambra Shrine and the Mounted Patrol Unit and served as Past Potentate in 1982.

He attended Soddy United Methodist Church.

Mr. Marsh was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Jean Holloway Marsh.

Survivors are his wife, Nyla Rose Marsh; four daughters, Gayla Bennett, of Signal Mountain, Diane Eavey, of Jacksonvil­le, Fla., Cynthia Marsh, of Chattanoog­a and Johnna Bell, of Ooltewah; seven grandchild­ren; eight great-grandchild­ren; stepdaught­er, Missie Bowers, of Knoxville, and two step-grandchild­ren.

A celebratio­n of life service will be held Thursday, at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

A private family burial will be held at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Mildred Imogene May, 88, of Soddy Daisy, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016.

She was a member of the Sale Creek church of God.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Bunk May; a sister, Rita Shipley and her parents, Lawrence and Jane Davis.

She is survived by her children, Ronnie (Deanna) May, Sherry ( Charlie) Chauncey, Rickey ( Judy) May, Kim (Gene) Holland, David May and Monty May; her grandchild­ren, Jeff (Sandi) May, Chuck (Jeri) Chauncey, Rickey (Delphia) May, Jr., Jason Chauncey, Rachel Roddy, Timmy May and Taylor May; her brothers, Samuel Davis and Joel Davis; her sisters, Barbara Newman and Wanda Clift; along with several great-grandchild­ren; and two great great-grandchild­ren.

Dolores Hughes McFadden, 84, of Red Bank, died Sunday, March 13, 2016, at Dade Health Care.

The daughter of the late William Taylor and Mary Delta Wilson, she was also preceded in death by a granddaugh­ter, Lauren Riley; sister, Elaine Dodd; and brother, Stanley Wilson.

Jacob “Jake” Wright

Jacob “Jake” Austin Wright, 21, of Ooltewah, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2016.

He was born on March 6, 1995 in Huntsville, Ala. and graduated f rom Ooltewah High School, where he was a member of the marching band and played football for three years.

Jacob attended Silverdale Baptist Church and was active in the youth band playing the guitar and drums.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Scott Smith.

Jacob is survived by his mother, Karon Gipson Smith; father, William T. Larry Cordell

GEORGETOWN — Larry Reed Cordell, 67, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2016, at the family residence.

He attended Mount Olive Church of God. He was a retired employee with Olin. Larry loved fishing, hunting, singing but he loved his daughters and grandchild­ren the most.

Mr. Cordell is the son of the late John Oliver Cordell and Odessa June McAlpin Cordell and was also preceded in death by his sister, Frances Hardin; and his brother, Grover Cordell.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jacquelin Simmons- Smith Cordell, of Georgetown; two daughters, Michelle Cordell Ledford and Brittany Cordell Harmon and husband, Brett, all of Cleveland; three grandchild­ren, Lauren Ledford, of Chattanoog­a, Carolyn Ledford, and Julia Holt Ledford; siblings, Margie Brown, Alberta Stepp, both of Cleveland, John William and wife, Linda Cordell, of Hixson, Carroll and wife Beth Cordell, of Lupton City, Tenn. Marcella M. Woody

BIRCHWOOD — Marcella M. Woody, 87, passed away Monday, March 14, 2016. She was a native of Greenevill­e, Tenn. and a graduate of Camp Creek High School and Frenchburg College, in Frenchburg, Ky. Marcella was a retired bookkeeper. She was a member of Birchwood Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Lura Myers; husband, Charles W. Woody; son, George Blane Masters III; two step daughters, Judy Woody and Susie Smith; two sisters, Eileen Myers and Inelle Broyles; and three brothers, Paul Myers, Don Myers and Clyde Myers.

Survivors include her daughter, Carla ( Kenneth) Laster, of Birchwood, Tenn.; son, Charles “Charlie” H. ( Donna) Woody, of Birchwood, Tenn.; step daughter, Janet Woody, of Johnson City, Tenn.; and several grandchild­ren; great- grandchild­ren; nieces; and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2016, in the chapel of Fike- Randolph & Son Funeral Home, with Pastor Frank Wright officiatin­g.

Interment will follow in Holder Memorial Cemetery, with Roger Myers, Michael Laster, John Myers, Lloyd Myers, Scott Harvey and Masters serving as pallbearer­s.

A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.

Harrell Presley

RINGGOLD — Benton “Harrell” Presley, 86, passed away Monda,y March 14, 2016. A native of Cookeville, Tenn., he has lived in the Ringgold area most of his life. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, where he served in the Korean War, a former employee of Quaker Oats, where he worked for 35 years and was a former member of the Gold Rings Square Dance Group.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Stone Presley; parents, Ossie Owen and Dora Eldridge Presley; sisters, Bertha Phy, Dorothy Herndon and Ethel Presley; and brothers, Grady Presley, Earl Presley and Hulon Presley.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Brock Presley, of Ringgold, Ga.; two daughters, Melodie (Robert) Church, of Ringgold, Ga., and Teresa ( Vernus) Bredeson, of Dalton, Ga.; three step sons, Gary (April) Teem, of Ringgold, Ga., Stanley (Lisa) Teem, of Ringgold, Ga., and Larry Teem, of Ringgold, Ga.; two sisters, Mary Tillman, of Ringgold, Ga., and Jessie Cochran, of Apison, Tenn.; nine grandchild­ren, Ben Bredeson, Rob Church, Tripp Church, Cayce Johnson, Chase Teem, Lindsey Sun, Corey Teem, Melissa Teem and Alecia Teem; several great- grandchild­ren; nieces; and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2016, in the funeral home chapel, with Bro. Gary Knowles officiatin­g.

Interment will follow at Catoosa Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 4-8 p. m. and Thursday, from 9 a.m. until funeral time, at the funeral home.
