Lookouts beat Smokies

- STAFF REPORT

It was inevitable the Chattanooga Lookouts’ losing streak would come to an end eventually.

It was not so apparent early in Wednesday’s game against the Tennessee Smokies that this would be the night.

Tennessee scored a run in three of the first four innings to take control before the Lookouts answered with two big innings on their way to an 8-4 victory at AT&T Field.

It ended Chattanooga’s skid at five games.

Trailing 3-1 entering their half of the fifth, the Lookouts got back-to-back one-out singles from Edgar Corcino and Engelb Vielma. Corcino scored on Zach Granite’s sacrifice fly to center field, Vielma scored when Ryan Walker reached on an infield error and Walker scored when Mitch Garver hit his 10th home run of the season to put the Lookouts up 5-3.

Tennessee got a run back in the sixth, but in the bottom half Corcino’s single scored Stuart Turner, who had a leadoff walk and moved to second on Shannon Wilkerson’s single. Wilkerson came home when Vielma bunted his way on, and Corcino — who moved to second on the bunt and went to third on a wild pitch — scored on a sacrifice fly by Garver.

Corcino homered in the third inning.

The third contest of the fivegame Southern League series is at 7:15 tonight. Michael Wagner (1-0, 1.00 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Smokies, with Omar Bencomo (2-6, 4.60) set to take the mound for Chattanooga.
