DSC losing Redman to high school job
John Redman is leaving his job as assistant basketball coach at Dalton State College to be the high school boys’ head coach at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile, which has won an Alabama-record 187 state championships in a variety of sports. Among its alumni are football players AJ McCarron, Jake Coker and Mark Baron, baseball pitcher
Jake Peavy and golfer Zach Slusher. The St. Paul’s campus is on property bought from Spring Hill College, where Redman played basketball. The native of Spanish Fort, Ala., has been part of a three-year-old Dalton State program that is 77-19 with the 2015 NAIA Division I national championship. “I could not be happier for Coach Redman,” Roadrunners head coach Tony Ingle said in a school release. “I feel like it is a perfect fit for him at this time, and I could never thank him enough for everything he did to help us build a solid basketball program. He will do an outstanding job, and I’m sure he will be thrilled to be back closer to his hometown, among his friends and family.” Said Redman, who overcame a near-fatal automobile accident during his time at DSC: “The Dalton State community blew my mind with their love and support. I will be forever indebted to Dalton State College, Coach Ingle and the DSC athletic department. … My time with Coach Ingle was amazing, and I love him like a father.” Redman begins his new job on Aug. 8.
VOLLEYBALL
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in NCAA Division I, Lee University in Division II and Covenant College and Sewanee in Division III all were listed this week in the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s record total of team academic award winners for 2015-16. The honor requires a cumulative team grade point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.
TRACK & FIELD
The UTC women’s track and field team tied for 12th out of 221 Division I teams earning all-academic honors Thursday from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Mocs tied Arizona State and DePaul with their cumulative 3.57 GPA. San Francisco, Portland and Lipscomb were the top three at 3.68, 3.671 and 3.670. UTC was second at 3.73 last year and 10th at 3.54 in 2014. Lee University (3.23) was a women’s all-academic team in Division II, where Tiana Mills from Chattanooga and Girls Preparatory School was one of two all-academic individuals from Carson-Newman. That required a 3.25 GPA and at least a provisional qualifying standard for a national meet. The Sewanee women (3.34) and men (3.31) were Division III all-academic teams.
SOCCER
The Bryan College men’s soccer team won the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season last year with an 8-0-1 league record and was 13-5-2 overall, and the Lions begin their 2016 season in less than a month. They will host Freed-Hardeman in the official opener at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27 and be home also against Cumberlands (Ky.) on Sept. 1 and Cumberland (Tenn.) on Sept. 27 with five road matches in between. Two of those, at Bluefield on Sept. 17 and at St. Andrews on Sept. 24, are league contests. Bryan plays at AAC tournament champ Union (Ky.) on Oct. 5 before its league home opener and homecoming against Milligan on Oct. 8. After three other road games, two in AAC play, the Lions will conclude their regular season at home against Point, Montreat and Tennessee Wesleyan on Oct. 22, 26 and 29. “We have a lot of work to do to get where we need to be,” coach Drew Courtney said in a school release Thursday, “but I believe we have the right group of guys who are ready for that type of commitment.”
