Miller team wins a state tennis title

One of the eight Chattanoog­a teams in the Tennessee State Adult Mixed Doubles tennis tournament clinched a championsh­ip Saturday at the Champions Club, and four others have chances to be champions today and earn Southern Sectional berths. The event has included 48 teams, ranging from Upper East Tennessee to Memphis, and about 500 players in 11 divisions by age group and ratings combinatio­ns. Lau’s Chattanoog­a team in the 40-over 7.0 category is done at 3-1 with Jackson at 2-1 and facing Nashville this morning. Debbie

Rogers’ team and a Memphis team match 4-0 records at 9:30 a.m. at Baylor School in 55-over 8.0, and Tom McCullough’s 65-over 7.0 team is tied with a Knoxville group at 3-1 with 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. matches left today at the Racquet Club. Each team match consists of three duos per side. Also securing titles by the end of play Saturday were Memphis 18and 40-over 9.0 teams and Knoxville 18- and 40-over 6.0 entries.

› Lauren Greenspoon totaled 60 assists as the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a volleyball team won both of its Saturday matches 3-0 in its Chattanoog­a Classic Presented by Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown. The Mocs (3-0) play Cal State Fullerton at 3 p.m. today in Maclellan Gymnasium. Allie

Davenport had 10 kills and seven digs in the 25-10, 25-14, 25-21 defeat of Presbyteri­an, when Kristy Wieser and Miranda Elpers added nine and seven kills, Greenspoon had 10 digs with 29 assists and Kasey Altman had 11 digs. Wieser and Dani Szczepansk­i each had seven kills and Eden Murray had six in the 25-9, 25-7, 25-8 rout of Mississipp­i Valley State, and Rachel Petkosh had 12 digs. Presbyteri­an’s Samantha Del Toro had 10 kills against the Mocs.

› Bryan College defeated Brenau 3-1 (2729, 25-9, 26-24, 25-10) Saturday morning in the Faulker Invitation­al volleyball tournament in Montgomery, Ala., and edged Bethel 3-2 (2516, 25-14, 15-25, 23-25, 19-17) in the afternoon. The Lady Lions are 3-1, as is Bethel.

› Bryan College swept visiting Freed-Hardeman in its soccer season openers Saturday, 2-1 in the women’s game and 6-1 in the men’s with a Charlie Clarke hat trick in the first 13:06. Idieder made it 5-0 early in the second. › The Tennessee Wesleyan men’s soccer team is 1-0-1 after defeating Savannah College of Art and Design 2-1 with a dramatic finish Saturday in Savannah, Ga. TWU’s Jordan Jacob scored 9:11 into the match from a double assist by Ben Timms and OT Bah. The hosts made it 1-1 at 88:08, but freshman Alec Riihimaa put the Bulldogs ahead again 50 seconds later. Wesleyan had an 18-5 advantage in shots.

› Mia Wiersema’s goal in the 74th minute gave Asbury a 2-1 home soccer win Saturday against a Tennessee Wesleyan women’s team opening its season. Wiersema is a daughter of former Covenant College standout Mike Wiersema and also had a goal in the 2-0 Eagles’ first game. TWU’s Nicole

Broderick scored just 4:26 in, but the Eagles equalized at 28:08 on a corner kick. Asbury outshot the Lady Bulldogs 23-14.

› The Dalton State women’s soccer team is 2-0 for the season and for the program’s history after a 4-2 win Saturday night against Johnson & Wales in Jacksonvil­le, Fla. Rosie Lindo had two goals and two assists and Adriana Romera scored the other goals for the Roadrunner­s.

FOOTBALL

› UTC football coach Russ Huesman will be the guest speaker for the Chattanoog­a Quarterbac­k Club’s first meeting of the 2016-17 year, and that will be Monday at noon at the Stadium Club at Finley Stadium. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without, and the public is invited.
