Man arrested after Sale Creek standoff
A man is in custody after a standoff Wednesday evening in Sale Creek.
The incident, which unfolded on Leggett Road, involved a man who allegedly fired at authorities multiple times. It ended just before 8 p.m. when the suspect was arrested.
Matt Lea, a spokesman for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies were originally called to the scene on a report of a family member making suicidal threats.
When they arrived, the man, whose identity has not been released, allegedly fired at officers before retreating into the home.
A SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene to assist, and authorities man-
aged to breach the property gate and set up near the home, but the man again fired at the deputies, the release states.
Throughout the evening, the man was in periodic contact with authorities but was uncooperative, including after several rounds of tear gas were fired into the home.
During negotiations, the suspect shot a third time at the deputies, who then returned fire.
After several hours of negotiations, the man was taken into custody, although Lea could not say whether he was taken forcefully or if he had surrendered.
Once detained, the suspect was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation and Lea later confirmed that neither he nor the deputies had been hit by gunfire.
Several charges against the man are pending, including felony reckless endangerment.
HCSO Chief Deputy Allen Branum was on the scene and stated, “I am extremely proud of the care and restraint exhibited by our personnel on scene in trying to bring this very serious incident to a safe and peaceful resolution.
“Despite being fired upon numerous times, deputies managed to get the individual into custody without serious injury. This situation could have easily resulted in a very different outcome.”
