‘Fiddler on the Roof’ celebrates Theatre Centre’s 93rd season

- STAFF REPORT

The Chattanooga Theatre Centre opens its 93rd unbroken season on Friday, Sept. 9, with a 10-performance run of the musical “Fiddler on the Roof.”

The show is directed by Allan Ledford with musical direction by Tim Hinck and choreography by Christi Barr.

Now coming to the end of a revival run on Broadway, “Fiddler” won nine Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964.

“There’s a reason this show is a favorite,” says Ledford. “The songs are memorable, the story is engaging, and the characters are unforgettable.”

Joel Scribner makes his CTC debut in the role of Tevye.

“We couldn’t have done any better,” Ledford says of the casting. “Tevye and the players around him tell this wonderful story of universal themes about things we hold dear, things that really matter. Life unravels, but it brings the people and the village together.”

Set in tiny Anatevka in Imperial Russia in 1905, “Fiddler” tells the story of Tevye, a poor dairyman, who tries to protect his daughters and instill in them traditional values in the face of a changing world. With iconic and beloved songs such as “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” the production has been lauded as the perfect mix of audience-pleasing humor and heart.

“You will love this show, whether it’s your first time to see it or a revisit,” Ledford promises. “We see there is joy in the pain and happiness in adversity. ‘To life, to life. L’chaim’.”
