Family Fun Day launches Kids Club at Hunter Museum
Hunter Museum of American Art will launch its new Hunter Kids Club with a Family Fun Day on Sunday, Sept. 11.
From 2 to 4 p.m., all members of the family can enjoy interactive experiences at the museum, including storytelling by River City Sessions founder Michael Gray, dance and movement for kids, kid-friendly guided tours by teen docents from the Creative Discovery Museum and in-gallery drawing. Families also can play a larger-than-life game of Pick Up Sticks or create a take-home work of art in the Chattanooga Public Library’s Big Whimsy, a giant coloring fort.
To top off the day, the Hunter will announce the six winners from the Children’s Storytelling
Contest conducted in July for children in grades K-5. More than 50 stories were submitted, and the authors of the six winning entries will read their interpretations of the illustrations featured in the museum’s current special exhibition, “Masters of the Golden Age: Harvey Dunn and His Students.”
Free to all area children, membership in the Kids Club gives kids their own passport and the opportunity to experience the museum through interactive activities. In addition to getting their passport stamped every time they visit, Kids Club members will maintain a personal art journal at the museum, which will be updated monthly with a new activity for experiencing the museum. The accumulation of passport stamps will allow kids to earn prizes.
“Introducing a new generation to a love of art and creativity through experiences at the Hunter gets to the core of our mission,” says Virginia Anne Sharber, executive director of the Hunter. “We are excited to recognize the creative young authors who participated in the story writing contest and to kick off our new Kids Club initiative with the first of several Family Fun Days we have planned for the year.”
