DSC women finish second

Led by junior Caroline Griffin with a fifth-place finish for 36 holes, the Dalton State College women’s golf team finished second Wednesday in the SCAD Atlanta Fall Invitation­al at The Oaks Course in Covington, Ga. Griffin and teammate Isabel Rijos, a freshman, each closed with a par round of 71 to lead the Roadrunner­s, whose 287 for the day broke a program record set the day before. Rijos finished seventh in her first college tournament, while fellow freshman Tia Tieniketo was ninth and sophomore Katie Dalton was 10th. SCAD Atlanta won the tournament.

BASKETBALL

Covenant College released Tuesday the first schedule for new men’s basketball coach Arte Culver, and the defending USA South champion will play five NCAA Division III tournament teams from last season. The Scots also will play two exhibition­s against Division I teams — returning to the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a on Nov. 4 and facing Tennessee State on Dec. 27 in Nashville. Culver’s first official game will be on Nov. 15 at home against Emory, which eliminated Covenant from the 2016 national tournament, and the Scots will host the University of Dallas and Emory & Henry on Nov. 18-19, when LaGrange will be the fourth team at Barnes Physical Education Center. The Scots will visit another regional national tournament participan­t, Birmingham-Southern, on Nov. 22 and play a week later at Sewanee. After hosting Oglethorpe on Dec. 6, they will play national tournament teams Whitworth and Whitman on Dec. 9-10 in Washington state and open USA South play at Ferrum on Dec. 17. After the TSU exhibition and Dec. 30-31 nonconfere­nce games in Jackson, Miss., against Millsaps and Belhaven, Covenant will host conference games on Jan. 6, 7 and 10, beginning with nationals participan­t LaGrange in a rematch of the 2016 USA South tournament final. This year’s league tournament is set for Feb. 23-25 at the home of the No. 1 seed.

The Covenant women’s basketball team opens Nov. 15 at home against Sewanee and then plays Nov. 18-19 in Danville, Ky., against host Centre and Mary Baldwin. After visiting Berry on Nov. 22 and hosting Oglethorpe, Birmingham-Southern and Rust on Dec. 6, 10 and 17, the female Scots will play Dec. 30-31 at Millsaps and Belhaven and Jan. 3 at Sewanee. They will open USA South play Jan. 6-7 at home against Piedmont and Salem. Salem is one of three new women’s members in the league, creating two divisions with Covenant in the West.

VOLLEYBALL

Former East Hamilton standout

Emma Lenoir was selected the Gulf South Conference women’s volleyball freshman of the week last week. Lenoir had 56 kills overall and helped Christian Brothers University start the season 4-0. She had 18 kills against Barton and 19 against Arkansas Tech. She also totaled 36 digs and eight blocks.
