TENNIS

› Chattanooga’s Wesley Cash and Mark Vines of Naples, Fla., have won seven USTA national doubles together in recent years, and Wednesday they beat Scott LaRue of California and Marc Lakin of Michigan 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 16 of the Men’s 55 National Grass Court Championships at Pontiac, Mich. Cash and Vines are seeded No. 2 and had a bye in the first round. They play fifth-seeded Peter Markes of Austin, Texas, and Paul Moss of New York in the quarterfinals. Cash, a teaching pro at Manker Patten, swept USTA age-group doubles titles two years in a row but did not compete in national tournaments last year.

› Betty Sue Farmer will be remembered in a celebration of life Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mountain City Club downtown, after a graveside service at Forest Hills Cemetery following family visitation from noon to 2 p.m. at Wann Funeral Home in St. Elmo. She died last Thursday at age 76. Among her many other activities, she was big in the local tennis community and beyond as Betty Sue Kelly, in running tournaments, serving on the board and as president of the Chattanooga Tennis Club and as an umpire who worked the U.S. Open and other tournaments throughout North America for years. She helped coach the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s tennis team to three Division II national championships in the early 1980s. In later years she was married to former Mocs football star Wayne Farmer, who preceded her in death this year, and her son, Tim Kelly, is a co-founder of the Chattanooga Football Club soccer organization.

› The Southern Cup junior tennis team competition for ages 14-, 16- and 18-under boys and girls representing their states returns this weekend to Chattanooga, where the 12s event was held last weekend. Play will start Friday at 8 a.m. at the Champions Club and Baylor School, and there is no charge to watch. After singles and doubles on Friday, the teams from the nine states will be divided into gold, silver and bronze divisions for all-singles play Saturday and doubles Sunday morning. The Tennessee team will be at Champions on Friday.

RUNNING

› UTC’s Paul Stuart was named the Southern Conference men’s cross country runner of the week for his seventh-place finish in the Mocs’ PowerAde Invitational last Friday. He ran the five-kilometer course in 15:39.06.

› Lee University’s Christian Noble and Audrey Smith were the Gulf South Conference runners of the week for their strong showings in Furman’s meet last Saturday, and Lee’s Blakely Moore was the women’s freshman of the week. The Lee men are No. 1 in the South Region rankings and rose to No. 21 nationally; the Lady Flames are No. 2 in the region.

VOLLEYBALL

› The Dalton State volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-18) Tuesday night at Life University. Grace Hardin had seven kills and Ryan Burke added six for DSC (2-5), which hosts Bethel in an SSAC match tonight.
