Lee opens 25th PRESIDENTI­AL CONCERT SERIES with Russian pianist

Russian pianist Ilya Yakushev, an audience favorite from his first Lee University appearance in 2011, returns tonight, Sept. 15, to kick of the 25th season of the Presidenti­al Concert Series on the Cleveland, Tenn., campus.

The performanc­e takes place in Pangle Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Yakushev won his first award at age 12, and many more have followed, including a 2005 win at the World Piano Competitio­n in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 2014, he became a member of the St. Petersburg Piano Quartet, had work published by British label Nimbus Records and was named “one of the very best young pianists before the public today” by American Record Guide.

Yakushev is one of several world-class performers who are booked for

the Presidenti­al Concert Series this season. Still to come:

Sept. 26: Arrival, an ABBA show band from Sweden, performing with the Lee University Symphony Orchestra.

Oct. 25: Choral music group Chanticlee­r.

Nov. 14: Violinist Isabelle Faust with pianist Alexander Melnikov.

Jan. 24: Soprano Susannah Biller Kness, a Cleveland native.

Feb. 21: Lee pianists Gloria Chien and Ning An.

March 13-15: ChamberFes­t, featuring the Miró String Quartet with clarinetis­t Ricardo Morales.

Tickets will be available one week before each concert at the Dixon Center box office, 1053 Church St. NE. On show dates, any available tickets will be sold at the door. To purchase tickets by phone, call 423-614-8343 between 3 and 6 p.m. weekdays.
