HAMILTON COUNTY Dr. Thomas E. Bibler

Dr. Thomas E. (Tom) Bibler, 79, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Sept. 24, 2016, peacefully in his sleep. Tom was born in Muncie, Ind., on Dec. 7, 1936. He graduated from Burris High School in Muncie and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Stanford University and a doctorate in education from Ball State University.

Tom married Nancy Ann (Fisher) Bibler on June 15, 1958, in Muncie; they were married for 58 years.

Tom moved to Chattanoog­a in 1970 to become a member of the faculty at the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a. As a professor at UTC for 32 years, Tom held a variety of roles, including director of student teaching and head of the Teacher Preparatio­n Academy. He also served as president of the faculty council and as marshal at commenceme­nt for many years. He was instrument­al in the creation of the UTC Faculty Club.

Tom was very active in community, civic and educationa­l organizati­ons in Chattanoog­a and throughout Tennessee. He was a past president and longtime board member of the Tennessee ACLU; past president and longtime board member of the Tennessee Council for the Social Studies; and past president of the Southeast Regional Council for the Social Studies.

Tom continued his active civic involvemen­t after retiring from UTC, serving multiple terms as president of the Fort Wood Neighborho­od Associatio­n and as a Red Cross disaster volunteer and training class instructor.

He continued to supervise student teachers, taught classes in English as a Second Language, served as treasurer of the Chattanoog­a JFK club, served as officer of elections for the Hixson precinct for more than 20 years, served on the board of the UTC Retirees Associatio­n, was an active member of the Sister Cities program, was heavily involved in local Democratic organizati­ons and served on many other local boards and civic committees.

Tom is survived by his wife, Nancy Bibler; his two children, Joe Bibler and his spouse Jennie, Judy Bibler and her spouse, Michelle; three grandchild­ren Kevin, Sara and Meghan; his brother, Dr. Richard Bibler and his spouse, Doris; many nieces and nephews; and the rest of his family and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Henry Bibler and Marie Bibler; his two brothers, Robert Bibler and his spouse, Mary Margaret, and John Bibler; and his son, Andy Bibler.

Donovan Compton

Donovan Earl Compton, 86, of Chattanoog­a, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2016.

Jill Lisa Ann Herston Connolly

Lisa Ann Herston Connolly, 57, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Sept. 20, 2016.

Lisa was born on Feb. 8, 1959, in Akron, Ohio, and was a graduate of Green High School. She spent many years in Clearwater, Fla., and Dyersburg, Tenn., before moving to Chattanoog­a.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Marlene Herston.

She is survived by her son, Thomas (Shannon) Connolly, of Chattanoog­a; father, Jim (Carolyn) Herston, of Akron, Ohio; sisters, Jeri (Barry) Fullerton and Leslie Herston, of Largo, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Charles Cuff II

Charles Joseph Cuff II, 59, originally from Kearny, N.J., passed away peacefully at his home, Welcome Home of Chattanoog­a, on Sept. 9, 2016.

Mr. Cuff was a very kind and generous man. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and took pride in his fellow veteran brothers and sisters. He worked as a trainer and long distance truck driver for Covenant Transport.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. at the Chattanoog­a National Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, Charles requested that donations be made to Welcome Home of Chattanoog­a, Orange Grove Center or the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Philip Dugan II

Philip Dolan Dugan II, 67, passed away peacefully on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016. Philip is an Army veteran who survived the Vietnam war. He graduated with a civil engineerin­g degree from Louisiana State University. After 39 dedicated years, he retired from Tennessee Valley Authority. Philip was known for his story telling and unique sense of humor.

He loved Chattanoog­a and was actively involved in a variety of events throughout town.

Survivors include his daughter, Dianah Mullis, her husband Ryan, and granddaugh­ter, Vera; his son, Philip Dugan III and his fiancee, Erica; and beloved papillons, Igby and Charlie.

A graveside service will be held at Chattanoog­a National Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, with military honors.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Oscar “Sonny” Fryar

Oscar Allen “Sonny” Fryar, 77, of Chattanoog­a, died on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, in Nashville, Tenn.

He was a lifetime resident of the Chattanoog­a/Lookout Valley community and served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

Sonny was a master barber and owner of the Pioneer Bank Building Barber Shop on Chestnut Street. He was named the mayor of Chestnut Street and was the co-founder of the Chestnut Street Athletic Club. Sonny was an avid golfer, known as the Legendary OAF of Brown Acres, and Atlanta Falcons season ticket holder and fan. He was a devoted supporter of UTC Athletics and was of the Methodist faith.

More than anything, Sonny was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfathe­r and friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Ada Laferna Fryar Maples; stepfather, Lenord O. Maples; grandparen­ts, James B. Fryar and Flossie Marie Fryar.

Sonny is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Freddie Harris Fryar; son, Lance “Bogey” Fryar and his wife, Kristy Fryar; daughters, Alana Gayle Fryar and Kellie Fryar Colston and her husband, James “Jimmy” Colston; grandchild­ren, Harrison and Hannah Colston and Gracey and Abbey Fryar; brother, Raymond “Bubba” Fryar; cousin, Eddie Whitehouse and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be private.

Marilyn Gail Geraldson

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Marilyn Gail Geraldson on Sept. 20, 2016.

Known to her admiring audience as local television’s “The Veggie Lady,” Marilyn’s regular appearance­s taught many viewers the ins and outs of cooking and selecting the right produce throughout the year.

She was also the author of her own popular cookbook, The Veggie Lady Shares, an assortment of recipes from her personal collection­s as well as those featured on her TV guest appearance­s. It went on to sell thousands of copies in multiple printings with the proceeds benefiting the Chattanoog­a Area Food Bank.

Marilyn was born in Superior, Wis., on April 16, 1936, to the late Angus B. Rothwell and Florence Jones Rothwell.

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin Stout, with a degree in home economics and years later graduated with her agricultur­al degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a.

She spent many years serving the role of loving mother and devoted Navy wife in locations around the United States and abroad including Monte Ray, Calif., Newfoundla­nd, Canada, and the island of Guam.

Marilyn served as the Hamilton County Agricultur­e Extension Agent for over 20 years.

During this time, she promoted local Tennessee farmers and agricultur­al products to consumers in the Tennessee Valley area. In this capacity, she went on to host her own weekly radio segment and write weekly newspaper columns.

Marilyn is best known, however, for her regular Wednesday, guest appearance­s on WRCB Channel 3 as the beloved “Veggie Lady.”

Marilyn was a longtime member of Saint Johns United Methodist Church, serving many roles and singing in the choir.

She was also known to her friends and family as a talented seamstress, producing a wide array of clothes, linens and in later years handbags, monogrammi­ng and exquisite quilts and tapestries.

She enjoyed sewing so much that she taught regular classes on sewing and quilting techniques. Marilyn was also a master gardener and loved planting and was an avid bird watcher.

Marilyn was preceded in death by the late Elmer Lee Geraldson, her husband of 57 years and retired Navy Commander; her brother, William Rothwell; and her loving grandson, Joshua Steven Geraldson.

She is survived by her three children, Lee Geraldson, of Chattanoog­a, Steve (Kathy) Geraldson, of Olive Branch, Miss., and Elizabeth (Paul) White, of Ringgold, Ga.; grandchild­ren, Sarah Dixon, Aubree Bates, Alexis Bivens, Jessica Geraldson, Matthew Geraldson, and Riley White; sister, Gene (Bill) Olsen, of Charlotte, N.C.; sister-in-law, Phyllis Henriksen, of Milwaukee, Wis., Appie Geraldson, of Manitowoc, Wis., and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at Saint Johns United Methodist Church, Chattanoog­a. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. following visitation.

Arlie Herron

Arlie Edwards Herron, 88, of Ooltewah, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016.

He taught in the English Department of University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a for 37 1/2 years and retired as head of the English Department in 1998. That same year he received an award of the Order of the South in recognitio­n for his contributi­ons to the advancemen­t of Southern American literature. He was a member of Ooltewah United Methodist Church.

Survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Sarah Virginia Herron; sons, Geoffrey B. Herron, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Mark (Christa) Herron, of Murfreesbo­ro, Tenn.; daughters, Alise (Walter) Ballew, of Cleveland, Tenn., Lora D. Herron, of Maryville, Tenn.; grandsons, Christophe­r Herron and Samuel (Courtney) Herron; granddaugh­ters, Sarah (Jeffery) Langley, Hannah (Chris) Hulsey and Jolene Ballew; great-grandchild­ren, Jase and Jaden Langley; brother-in-law, Mabry Fowler Jr.; sister-in-law, Frances (Allen) Shephard; and several nieces and nephews.

Lula Jenkins

Lula Edna Jenkins, 81, of Chattanoog­a, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, in a local hospital. A lifelong resident of Chattanoog­a, she was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Hermie Jenkins; and her son, Allan Jenkins.

Survivors are her son-in-law, Nathan Williams; brother, Luther Jenkins, both of Chattanoog­a; cousins and many friends.

Services will be held Monday at 3 p.m., in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Matt Nevels and Mike Rice officiatin­g.

Entombment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Clarence Q. Johnson Jr.

Clarence Q. Johnson Jr. passed away unexpected­ly on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, in West Seneca, N.Y. He was born and spent much of his life in Chattanoog­a.

Mr. Johnson was a graduate of UTC, and obtained his law degree from Syracuse University.

He was the beloved husband and best friend of Catherine P.; dear father of Sarah A.; brother to Gretchen Keefe, Stacey Massengale and Shawn Hash; son of the late Willie Lee “Billie” Hash.

There will be no prior visitation.

Private services will be determined at a later date in Chattanoog­a.

Mathew Keller

Mathew “Matt” Loyd Keller, 33, a resident of Chattanoog­a, and formerly of Cleveland, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 16, 2016. The son of David and Margie Keller.

He was a 2002 graduate of Bradley Central High School, where he was a four-time state wrestling champ. He attended the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) on a wrestling scholarshi­p for three years.

He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a with a bachelor degree in sociology and again earning All-American status.

He was currently employed by Blewett Tree Service (Chattanoog­a).

Matt was an avid athlete and enjoyed living life to its fullest.

He loved wrestling, working with kids, music, yoga, art and people.

He was preceded in death by grandparen­ts, Margie and Wayne Jacks; cousin, Joe Keller; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Matt leaves behind his loving parents, David and Margie Keller; his brother, Josh (Becky) Keller; sister, Niki Keller Frailley (Heath); special friends, Dustin Blewett and Ellie Boss; grandparen­ts, Tommy and Ella Jo Keller; nieces who adored him, Savannah, Sophie, Sadie and Calli.

Matt is also survived by numerous other family members, extended family members and a host of special friends all over the United States.

A service celebratin­g his life is planned for Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at 4 p.m., at Reflection Riding Arboretum located at 400 Garden Road, Chattanoog­a.

Myrtle Lane, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, in a local hospital.

The Rev. H. Russell Mabry

The Rev. H. Russell Mabry, 75, of East Brainerd, died on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016. A resident of Chattanoog­a for the past 21 years, the Rev. Mabry retired after 22 years of service as a prison chaplain for the federal prison system.

During the 1987 Cuban Riot at the Atlanta Federal Penitentia­ry, the Rev. Mabry was held hostage for 11 days.

He was a graduate of Hillsboro High School in Nashville, Vanderbilt University and Louisville Presbyteri­an Seminary.

The Rev. Mabry enjoyed road biking, classical music and was an avid reader. He was a member of New Hope Presbyteri­an Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, H.R. and Winnie Mabry; and brother, Windell Mabry.

Survivors are his wife of 51 years, Donna Mabry; daughter, Jennifer Mabry, Los Angeles, Calif.; son, Henry Russell Mabry III, of Knox City, Mo.; granddaugh­ter, Winnie Ziomek, Los Angeles, Calif.; niece, Anne O’Dell, of Jacksonvil­le, Fla.; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Celebratio­n of life services will be held at 4 p.m. today, Sept. 25, 2016, at New Hope Presbyteri­an Church, 7301 Shallowfor­d Road, with the Rev. Candace Worth and the Rev. Art Jones officiatin­g.

Ola Mae Moore, 92, passed away Sept. 19, 2016.

The funeral service will be held Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at 1 p.m. in the chapel.

Burial in Chattanoog­a National Cemetery on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at 12:30 p.m.

Camilla Nance

Camilla Josephine “Sugarbabe” Jones Nance, 76, passed away Sept. 18, 2016, at her residence.

She was born in Chattanoog­a in 1940.

She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, under Pastor Penny.

Later she started attending Olivet Baptist Church. Camilla was a graduate of Howard High School.

She was an owner and operated Annie Mae’s Place on M.L. King Boulevard.

She was well known in the community for feeding and boarding those who needed help.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Nance; parents, Ruben and Annie Mae Jones; grandparen­ts, Tom and Mary Garner; sister, Annie Elizabeth Morgan.

She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved pets, Sheba, Yogi and Max; children, Cheryl Ann (Gary) Davis, Kevin L. Nance and Deborah Halfacre; three grandchild­ren, Montrell Turnbow Allen, Sharika (Quintell) Wilson and Keedra L. Nance Kelley; great-grandchild­ren, K’yannah Wilson and Quintell Wilson Jr., De Kiereal Kelley and De’ Kiereun Kelley; sisters, Lee Anna Porter, of Boston, Mass., Flora Taylor, of Carson, Calif.; Ruby Gibbs and brother-inlaw, Thomas A. Sondra Nicholas

Sondra Darlene Nicholas, 57, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016.

She lived most of her life in the Hixson and Soddy-Daisy area and enjoyed visiting The Vineyard Church.

Sondra was a teacher for 15 years at Daisy Head Start. She had a love for children, being a “Nana,” family and the Tennessee Volunteers. She had incredible courage in the face of adversity and an ability to handle challenges with a sense of humor.

Sondra was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell Nicholas; parents, Charlie and Elva Woy; sister, Brenda Minnick and brother, Charles Gionfriddo.

Survivors are her daughter, Sondra Nichole Raines (Carl Jr.); sisters, Barbara Gravitte (Roger) and Mary Atwood (Rick); brothers, Ronnie Gionfriddo (Jeanne) and Chuck Woy (Tracy); grandchild­ren, Corbin Isiah Raines and Sondra Vanessa Raines; mother-in-law, Virginia Coker (Bill) and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebratio­n of Life will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Scramble Alley Park behind Soddy-Daisy City Hall.

Travis “Bud” Parsons

Travis “Bud” Parsons, born Sept. 30, 1936, in Murray County, Ga., passed away on Sept. 20, 2016, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanoog­a. He served in the United States Air Force, was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a member of Valley Brook Golf and Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Wiley Parsons; son, David Parsons; grandson, Thomas Fox Parsons and daughter, Pamela Parsons, of Hixson; and two brothers, Tommy Parsons and Douglas Parsons; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rembert Parsons and Mamie Jo Whitfield Parsons; two brothers, Jerry and Emmett Parsons; and two sisters, Barbara Jean and Peggy Parsons.

A funeral Mass will be at St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace, Chattanoog­a, Tenn., at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016. Visitation will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church one hour before the service, beginning at 10 a.m.

Art Reese

Arthur Harold “Art” Reese, 90, of Chattanoog­a, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater in World War II.

After military service, he had a lifelong career with American Oil Co. During retirement, he enjoyed nearly 40 years of hunting, fishing, extensive travel and good times with his many friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Ruth W. Reese; mother, Bermuda McGregor Reese; father, William Reese; sister, Elizabeth Reese Trevathan and brother, William Reese.

Survivors are his daughters, Judy R. Varner (TC), Susan McGill (Johnny) and Mary Beth Austin (Ricky); seven grandchild­ren, 18 great-grandchild­ren, one great-great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Chattanoog­a National Cemetery with military honors.

Pallbearer­s will be grandsons, Shane Varner, Robbie McGill, David McGill and Chip Austin.

Visitation is today, Sept. 25, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Reeves

Mary Imogene Reeves, 82, of Lookout Valley, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016, at a local hospital.

Mrs. Reeves, a native of Bryant, Ala., was born on Oct. 26, 1933, to the late James H. and Rosa Countiss. She later moved to Chattanoog­a in the late 1960s.

She was previously employed with Alexian Village of Signal Mountain, where she served as a home health assistant.

Her passions in life were her family, spending time with her grandchild­ren and great-grandchild­ren, and enjoying her word puzzles. She also attended the Tiftonia Baptist Church in Lookout Valley.

Mrs. Reeves was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon H. Reeves; parents, James H. and Rosa Countiss; two daughters, Debbie D. Reeves and Linda Reeves; son, Lamar Hill; and one granddaugh­ter, Tammy E. Racheal.

Blanche Peck Sanders, 95, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, in a local health care facility.

A lifelong resident of Red Bank, Blanche was a 1938 graduate of Central High School. Her love of music was instilled in her by her father at an early age.

She was a well-respected musician, providing the piano accompanim­ent for many years at Red Bank Baptist, White Oak Baptist, Alpine Baptist, and Tyner Baptist Churches.

Blanche was preceded in death by her parents, Chester Ulus and Ida Legg Gross; her husbands, Reece A. Peck and A. Marvin Sanders; four brothers, Arnold, Ebb, Lynn, and Glynn Gross; sister, Helen Gross Etter; and stepson, Doug Sanders.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Peck (Charles) Keith; son, Alan Wade Peck (Suzy Simpson); stepson, Bryan (Pam) Sanders; granddaugh­ters, Kelly Duncan, Katie (Kevin) McKenna, Connie Sanders; great-grandsons, Mitch, Wesley, and Reece Duncan, Owen and Brecken McKenna; and several nieces and nephews.

Born Oct. 4, 1927, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of Alton Herman Lincoln, and Virginia Breen Lincoln.

She graduated from Mary Institute, St. Louis, Mo., and was a stewardess for Pan American, where she met her beloved husband, Jack.

Prudy was a remarkable person who will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmothe­r, great-grandmothe­r, friend and mentor.

We shall never see her likes again.

Survivors include four sons, John and his wife, Lyn; Andrew and his wife, Glenna; James; Bradford and his wife, Gina; seven grandchild­ren and eight great-grandchild­ren.

Stephen Nickolai Stovall, “Nicki,” 56, of Ooltewah, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2016, at the Hospice of Chattanoog­a Care Center.

He worked in the nuclear power industry for 25 years, until his illness prevented him from continuing on. He was an avid musician, playing his saxophone until two months ago, and was a member of Ooltewah Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Services will be at the Ooltewah Seventh-Day Adventist Church, visitation from 4 to 6 p.m., with a memorial service to follow. Pastor Peter Kulakov will be officiatin­g.

Joe Wilkinson

Joe M. Wilkinson, 60, departed for Heaven on Sept. 1, 2016.

He had battled numerous health problems for several years, but died suddenly as a victim of a hit-and-run automobile accident.

Joe was born in Chattanoog­a on March 21, 1956, to the late E.M. (Wilkie) and Bertie Lou Wilkinson.

He graduated East Ridge High School in 1974, and built a career as a mainframe computer programmer for hospitals and banks throughout East Tennessee. Joe tried retirement, but found that he was best suited to enjoy life while working.

He joined MAPCO as a full-time employee in May, 2016.

Joe was athletic, outdoorsy, and community minded.

He was an ROTC officer, Life Scout, high school wrestler and cross country runner. Later, he joined the Knoxville Elk’s Lodge No. 160 and served as a den leader for GSMC Cub Scout Pack 39.

Above all, Joe loved people. He was happiest when surrounded by friends and family. He leaves loved ones in all corners of the country.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and by grandparen­ts, Louie and Bertie M. McAlister.

He leaves behind his sister and her husband, Janice and Ken Hobbs, of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Robert Pail Wilkinson, of Knoxville; daughter, Bonnie Wilkinson, of Calhoun, Ga.; son, Tate Carty, of Knoxville; as well as three grandchild­ren, and one great-grandchild.

A celebratio­n of life service will be held in Knoxville on the beach at Hunter Valley Farm, on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at 3:30 p.m.

The family will receive friends prior to the Sequoyah Hills Presbyteri­an Church contempora­ry worship service later that afternoon.

Members of ERHS Class of ’74 are planning a celebratio­n for a later time.

Walter Curtis Williams, 69, of Lake Nickajack, died suddenly Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016.

A longtime resident of Atlanta, Ga., Mr. Williams has been a resident of Nickajack for the past three years.

He retired from Coca-Cola Bottling after 38 years of service and was an avid Coca-Cola memorabili­a collector and enjoyed woodworkin­g as well.

Mr. Williams was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church and formerly a member of First Baptist Church of Atlanta for over 30 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Mary Williams; and sister, Clara Jones.

Ms. Greene, a native of Baltimore, Md., was born on Oct. 3, 1938, and has spent the past six years in the Ringgold, Ga., area.

She was previously employed with South Trust Bank, where she worked in the bookkeepin­g/accounting department. Her passions in life were taking care of her cats. She loved animals and had volunteere­d her time with the Catoosa Citizens for Animal Care.

Patricia was a loving person and will truly be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara E. Greene; sister, Claire Fuqua and nephew, Joe Fuqua.
