McCollum leads UTC soccer win

Peyton McCollum assisted on one score and notched a clutch goal to lead the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Wofford on Sunday in Spartanbur­g, S.C. McCollum helped clean up the aftermath of an Ellie Myrick corner kick and set up Jordan Mueller for the game’s first goal in the 22nd minute. Wofford (2-9, 0-2 Southern Conference) scored in the 61st minute as Elise Fennegan came through on an Emma Fletcher assist, but UTC (3-7-1, 1-1) cut the tension less than two minutes later when McCollum scored from 15 yards out on a pass from

Summer Lanter’s hat trick highlighte­d a dominant day for the Lee University women’s soccer team in a 5-1 win at Shorter. Kinsey Cichowitz scored twice and McKenzie Bricker, Katie Cloud and Kaela Leskovar each had an assist for the Lady Flames (4-1-1), who never trailed but were tied when Shorter (0-5) scored in the ninth minute. Lee outshot Shorter 26-4 overall and 13-2 on goal.

GOLF

The UTC men’s golf team shot a seasonlow 876 as the Mocs finished 13th at Maui Jim Intercolle­giate on Sunday in Scottsdale, Ariz., and the University of South Carolina’s Scott Stevens from Chattanoog­a Christian was second individual­ly. Led by

Brooks Thomas, who shot a final-round 2-over-par 73 and finished at 212 to tie for 23rd, the Mocs closed with a 296 in the 54-hole tournament. Thomas’s total was a career best for the senior. Competing as an individual, UTC’s Stuart Thomas closed with a 74 and finished at 217 to tie for 44th. UTC’s Lake Johnson closed with a 72 to finish at 219 and share 52nd place, while teammates Wes Gosselin and Andrew

Weathers were part of the tie for 71st at 224 after Gosselin closed with a 76 and Weather shot a 78 Sunday. The Mocs’ Will Porter closed with a 75 and tied for 85th at 229. ›

The Lee University women’s golf team moved up three spots in the final round and finished third at the Battle at Old South in Bluffton, S.C. The Lady Flames shot a 299 in Sunday’s final round, one stroke better than their performanc­e Saturday, and their 599 total in the 36-hole tournament hosted by UNC Pembroke was seven strokes behind winner St. Leo, which was one shot better than Armstrong State. The Lady Flames finished two shots ahead of Montevallo in the 18-team field. Lee’s Sam Burrus closed with a 1-under-par 71 on the 5,874-yard layout and was part of a three-way tie for fourth place at 1-over 145, two strokes out of third. West Georgia’s Franziska Breem finished first at 141 after shooting a 69 Sunday. Lee’s Annika Gino tied for 16th at 152 after sharing fifth place at 71 on Saturday, with Caroline

Moore (153, tied for 25th), Haverly Harrold (154, tied for 33rd) and Anne Hedgegaard (155, tied for 40th) also competing for the Lady Flames.

VOLLEYBALL

Sewanee lost 3-0 at Oglethorpe on Sunday, with the set scores 25-18, 25-21 and 25-16. The Tigers (7-6, 1-4 Southern Athletic Associatio­n) were led by Diamond Stewart’s 10 kills and 10 digs, and Constance Connolly had 14 assists and 10 digs, Anna Wilson had 12 assists and eight digs, Sara Jayne

Sutton had 19 digs and Mason Gardella and Rebecca Rowan each had seven kills. Oglethorpe improved to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in the SAA.

FIELD HOCKEY

Sewanee lost 2-1 in overtime to visiting St. Mary’s of Maryland on Sunday, with Virginia Barry netting an unassisted goal for the Tigers ( 3-5) for a 1- 0 lead in the 62nd minute. St. Mary’s ( 2-7) tied a little more than a minute later then scored in the 76th minute for the win. Sewanee’s Katya Waters recorded nine saves.
