Vernon was proud of his military service. He served on the front lines in Korea, near the 38th parallel until 1953, when the conflict ended. Returning to the US, he marched in the 1953 New York Ticker Tape Parade honoring Korean troops. He earned several service medals including two Bronze Stars and two commendation for superior service. Shortly after Vernon’s Army discharge he moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., to live with his aunt and uncle Mr. and Mrs. Rome Benedict. On Aug. 27, 1961, Vernon joined Red Bank Baptist Church. Later that day, he and Jeanette began 55 years of dedicated marriage.
Vernon and Jeanette loved to Square Dance, visit family in Nebraska and North Carolina, search farm lands for Indian relics, and work crossword puzzles.
