Robert J. “Bob” Coulter, 93, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at Erlanger Hospital.

Irvin Davis Jr.

Irvin L. Davis Jr. “Lanny”, 74, died Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016. Lanny is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bennie P. Davis, of Knoxville; sister, Janice Thompson, of Chattanoog­a; nieces, Kimberly Coats and Rebecca Vincent, of Chattanoog­a; son, Nick Hess (Beth); granddaugh­ters, Shea Hess, and Jordan Hess; great-grandson, Zane Hess, all of Birchwood.

He was preceded in death by parents, Lois A. Davis and Irvin L. Davis, Sr.

Lanny graduated from City High in Chattanoog­a in 1959, University of Tennessee in 1963 with a degree in Civil Engineerin­g and in 1969, with a degree in Architectu­re. In the late 60’s Lanny establishe­d the firm Davis and Associates which later became Davis and Dolar Architect and Engineers until his retirement in 2005.

Lanny touched many lives in the 74 years we were blessed to have him with us. He loved helping people. He especially loved mentoring young people and introducin­g them to two things dear to him, hunting and fishing. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was happiest in the woods or on the lake. He sponsored several hunts for wounded warriors projects and disabled veterans.

Lanny was greatly loved and will be missed by many. Rest in peace my love.

Lanny’s family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel on Kingston Pike.

A graveside service will take place in Chattanoog­a at Hamilton Memorial Gardens on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at 1 p.m., with times to be announced.

Mildred Frye

Mildred Denton Frye, 87, passed from this life to her heavenly home joining her husband on Oct. 23, 2016.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Frye; infant son, Ronald Ray Frye; great-grandson, Hayden Mark Patterson; her parents, Josh and Ethel Denton; brothers, Raymond, Nat, Benson, Robert, Doyle, Lloyd Denton; and sister, Lottie Beasley.

She is survived by daughters, Debbie (Donny) Bell, of Hixson, Denice (Tim) Gilbert, of Lilburn, Ga.; grandchild­ren, Audra (Mark) Patterson, Lauren (Scott) Whidby, and Ethan Gilbert; great-grandchild­ren, Brett, Hannah and Noah Patterson; sister, Mary Etta Ballinger, of Nashville; and brother, Wayne Denton, of Old Hickory, Tenn.

Mildred was raised in Carthage, Tenn., and graduated from Smith County High School.

Married to Ray in 1947, they moved to the Chattanoog­a area.

She was retired from Blue Cross and was an active member of Dallas Bay Baptist Church.

She volunteere­d for many church activities and loved to travel with friends and family.

She also loved working in the yard, reading, and watching her grand and great- grandchild­ren’s sporting activities.

Funeral services will be held at the chapel on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held today, from 4 to 8 p.m., as well as noon to 2 p.m., before the service.

Brother David McNabb will officiate the ceremony and the pallbearer­s will be Wayne Denton Jr., Gary Denton, Barry Ballinger, Carter Denton, Jimmy Denton and Daniel Holleman.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Christian, Thomas and the staff of Regency House along with the staff of Avalon Hospice Service for their kindness and support during her stay.

J.L. Hyde

James LeBron “J.L.” Hyde, 82, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016.

J.L. was born in Chattanoog­a to the late J.M. and Lois S. Hyde. He was a 1953 graduate of Lakeview High School and the American Bankers Associatio­n Graduate School of Retail Bank Management, University of Virginia.

J.L. served our country in the U.S. Army. He was employed in 1971 by American National Bank and Trust Company, where he served as Branch Officer and Manager of the Park Central Branch since 1979. He then retired from SunTrust Bank.

J.L. was a longtime member of Abba’s House, where he was a greeter and usher for many years.

J.L. is survived by his wife of 41 years, Patricia Pinson Hyde; sons, Mike (Norma Jean) Hyde and Mark (Melissa) Hyde, both of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; stepchildr­en, Sharon E. Sawrie, Chattanoog­a and Jimmy Sawrie, Jupiter, Fla.; grandson, Dereck Hyde, his fiancé, Brooke Ferguson and her son, Sydney; siblings, Billy (Martha) Hyde, Kenneth (Darlene) Hyde, and Doris Thomas; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Abba’s House, 5208 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343.

A celebratio­n of J.L.’s life will follow at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the church with Dr. Ron Phillips, Dr. Ronnie Phillips, and Pastor Paulette Phillips officiatin­g.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributi­ons may be made in J.L.’s name to Abba’s House, Legacy 20/20 fund.

Hannah Martin

Hannah Cornelia Martin, 82, of Chattanoog­a, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016.

She was born in Fountain, Ala., on Aug. 18, 1934, to the late Jack and Nancy Hixon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Luther Martin; her sister, Elizabeth Davis; her brothers, Lamar Hixon, Alvin Hixon and Wallace Hixon; a brother-in-law, Robert Davis Sr. and a nephew, Lamar Davis.

Mrs. Martin was a unique individual, she was a very warm person, but she could take charge and organize with the veracity of a lion. There was never a job too small or too large for her to do and do well.

She loved and cared for the family and they in turn gave love, also, she had a unique love for her community and the individual­s in the community.

Mrs. Martin served on numerous boards and committees of various organizati­ons during her career but her first love was for the struggle through the membership and devout work with the NAACP, where she was a Diamond Life Member.

She held various offices at all levels of the organizati­on including serving as President and vice president in the local branch of the NAACP, along with winning a number of awards from the organizati­on; such as the Women in the NAACP Honoree, Ebony Fair Fundraisin­g, and State Conference of Branches Service Award.

In addition, the Chattanoog­a Branch of the NAACP gives an annual award in her name—“Hannah C. Martin ‘Through the Storm’ Award”.

She was employed full time over her fruitful years in different companies and retired from the State of Tennessee as a Pharmaceut­ical Technician at the Moccasin Bend health facility, where she was affectiona­tely called the “Pill Lady”.

She found time during her career to serve on the Hamilton County School Board, Chattanoog­a Neighborho­od Enterprise, Glenwood BPW, and as an active member of Union Grove Baptist Church. Other organizati­ons saw here good works and honored her with Hamilton County Distinguis­hed Citizen Award, Distinguis­hed Citizen City of Chattanoog­a; Glenwood BPW Woman of the Year, State Conference of Branches Leadership Award, Zeta Phi Beta Family Enrichment Certificat­e, and State of Tennessee Service Award-Senator’s.

She organized the annual Jubilee Day programs and the Black Dollar Days for many years.

Mrs. Martin leaves to cherish her precious memory her only child, Minister David E. Hamler (Beverly), of Petersburg, Va.; two granddaugh­ters, Angela Towns (Patrick), of Lexington Park, Md., and Alisa Price (Hillery), of Ridgeland, Miss.; five great-grandchild­ren, Darryn, Caleb, Gabriel, Destiny and Elijah David; two brothers, Robert Hixon, of Mobile, Ala., and John L. Hixon (Mary), of Gautier, Miss.; two nieces, Louise Davis O’Neal and Shirley Diane Davis, one nephew, Robert Davis, Jr., all of Chattanoog­a; a devoted great niece, L’Tonya Simpson (Kenneth) of Chattanoog­a, TN and great nephew, Herman O’Neal, Jr. of Decatur AL; She also leaves to cherish her memories, a very dedicated and devoted friend, Reverend Ann Jones Pierre, of Chattanoog­a, who became her caregiver after she became ill until her death.

The funeral service will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at John P. Franklin chapel, with Pastor Glenn P. Taylor officiatin­g. Internment in Forest Hills Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home 1101 Dodds Avenue, 629-9995.

Erwin Rogers Jr.

Erwin Rogers Jr., of Chattanoog­a, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at a local hospital.

Hazel Sedman

Hazel Marie Sedman,92, passed away peacefully on Monday morning.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret Fisher Sedman; and her sister, Nellie Jean Sedman.

She was a longtime member of White Oak United Methodist Church in Red Bank and was retired from Provident.

Hazel was a loving, sweet, and giving lady with a great sense of humor.

She was an optimist and a great friend and encouragem­ent to many.

Hazel and her sister, Nell, were avid travelers and took numerous bus tours and trips covering most of the states and loved to talk about those adventures.

She spent many of her days knitting and crocheting blankets to donate to The Samaritan Center. She also enjoyed painting and needlework, and loved working jigsaw puzzles. Hazel will be greatly missed by her church family and other close friends, as well as her wonderful caregivers at Summit View, where she had resided for over 13 years. Visitation will be at Chattanoog­a Funeral Home North Chapel, Hixson, Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, from noon to 2 p.m., followed by funeral services in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of any flowers, memorial contributi­ons may be made to White Oak United Methodist Church in her name.

A special thanks to Ivan and Caring Senior Services, as well as Erlanger staff, for their help and their compassion­ate care in her last days.

Glennice Kay Bruce Stebbins

Glennice Kay Bruce Stebbins, 81, passed away Monday, Oct. 17, 2016.

She lived in Texas most of her life until 2000.

She and her daughter moved to Chattanoog­a, to be with her other two children and their families.

She was an avid sports fan, enjoyed listening to music, and adding to her teddy bear collection.

She routinely attended Gospel Music Jam at Brainerd United Methodist Church on Sunday nights.

Most of all, she loved her family, spending time together, and sharing a laugh and happiness.

Survivors include son, Phil Prouty; daughter, Theresa Smallen; daughter and sonin-law, Athena and Joe Barta; seven grandchild­ren; six great grandchild­ren; neices and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, from noon to 1:15 p.m., at Brainerd United Methodist Church, 4315 Brainerd Rd, Chattanoog­a, TN 37411.

Celebratio­n service at 1:30 p.m., with burial to follow at National Cemetery.

Gavin Gardner

DUNLAP — Andrew Gavin Gardner, 20, went home to be with the Lord Saturday morning, Oct. 22, 2016.

Gavin loved cars, skate boarding, had a free spirit, never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face and a prank up his sleeve.

He graduated from Sequatchie County High School in the class of 2015.

He was the first male state qualifier in Sequatchie County High School Wrestling Team.

Billy Houston Massingale

CLEVELAND — Billy Houston Massingale, 77, passed away Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, in a local health care facility.

Billy was born on Jan. 27, 1939, in Charleston, Tenn., to Houston Massingale, of East Point, Ga., and Ruth Blackwell Massingale Poteet, of Cleveland.

Billy was a member of Clingan Ridge Baptist Church. He loved the Lord and was a great supporter of missions. He served as Sunday school superinten­dent in both Ringgold, Ga., and East Ridge.

Billy served in the United States Navy and was stationed out of Norfolk, Va., aboard the destroyer, USS Robert L. Wilson.

While in the Navy, Billy was the recipient of several medals.

Billy was predecease­d by his parents; brothers, Joe Blackwell, Marvin Massingale, Harvey Massingale and Charles Massingale; sister, Linda Poteet Staton.
