Bullock, Hale tops in region
Red Bank’s Cole Bullock in 17:25.30 and Boyd-Buchanan’s Jada Hale in 19:53.33 were the individual winners in the Region 3-A/AA cross country meet Tuesday at Camp Jordan Park, and Central’s boys and Arts & Sciences’ girls were the team winners with Red Bank and Boyd-Buchanan second and third in the boys’ race and Boyd-Buchanan second with Polk County third in the girls’ standings. Central had five boys in the top 12.

› Carson-Newman University sent out a release Tuesday about its hall of fame induction ceremony this Saturday, and former women’s basketball coach Lewis Bivens will be among those honored along with baseball standout Gene Lively, the local former coach and athletic director whose induction was reported Sunday. Bivens, who grew up in Etowah, went to Middle Tennessee State from the Jefferson City, Tenn., school and is second all-time in Lady Blue Raiders wins. The other inductees in this year’s class are Karen Morton for basketball and Mike Clowney and Cedrick Killings for football. The event is open to the public and starts with the athletic club’s annual meeting at 10:30 a.m. in Holt Fieldhouse. › Bryan College began its men’s basketball season Tuesday night with a 65-60 win at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala.

› Led by Emma Lenoir from East Hamilton with 22 kills and 17 digs, Christian Brothers University pulled out a 3-2 win in Gulf South Conference volleyball Tuesday night at Lee University. The set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 21-25, 15-13. Silvia Sartori had 14 kills and 20 digs for Lee (10-12, 6-8), which got 10 kills from Blaire Beamer and nine apiece from Brooke Wilsman and Catherine Conley. Kristi Farley had 27 assists and Sadie Johnson had 18 plus six aces, and MaKayla Beebe had 17 digs. › Bryan College won 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-14) at Columbia College and Tennessee Wesleyan won 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-10) over visiting Allen in AAC volleyball Tuesday. The National Association of Christian Athletes will run its national high school volleyball and boys’ soccer tournaments the next three days out of Fort Bluff Camp near Dayton, Tenn. There are 40 volleyball teams, and they will be using several gyms from Rhea County to Soddy-Daisy; group play will yield Friday to four championship divisions. A Chattanooga side is among the 26 soccer teams that will end up in three playoff divisions. ›
Bryan goalkeeper Alex Horton followed up his selection as AAC men’s soccer defensive player of the week with the NAIA national designation. The Lions are 13-0-3 overall and now ranked 10th in the NAIA. Allowing only two goals in three matches last week, Horton had a shutout against then No. 7 Campbellsville. ›
As the No. 2 seed from the West Division in the USA South tournament, the Covenant women’s soccer team will host Piedmont or Huntingdon in a quarterfinal at 3 p.m. Saturday. Piedmont, the No. 3 seed from the West, hosts sixth seed Huntingdon at 4 p.m. today.
GOLF
› The Dalton State women’s golf team finished third at 621 behind SCAD-Savannah (609) and Berry (617) in the Chickfil-A Intercollegiate tournament Tuesday at Stonebridge in Rome, Ga. DSC’s Caroline Griffin was fourth individually at 148, and Katie Dalton and Tia Teiniketo had 157s along with two teammates playing as individuals, Carly Shane and Haejin Choe.
