Two Mocs first in Mobile events

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a’s Wes Gosselin shared medalist honors while his team tied for third in the Mobile (Ala.) Sports Authority Intercolle­giate golf tournament Tuesday at the Magnolia Grove Crossing course, and fellow Mocs senior Brooks Thomas tied for first place in the simultaneo­us USA Individual at Magnolia Grove Falls. It was the second collegiate victory for Gosselin and the first for Thomas, a Ringgold High School graduate. Gosselin’s 6-under-par 210 included a 69 in the final round of the team competitio­n Tuesday, when the Mocs tied for the best round of the day with a 288. Louisville won the 15-school event with an 856, three better than host South Alabama with UTC and Mississipp­i State next at 862. The other co-medalist was Alexander Herrmann from fifth-place Georgia State. The Mocs’ Phillip Hickam tied for ninth at 214, Stuart Thomas tied for 11th at 215 and Andrew Weathers tied for 44th at 224. In addition to Brooks Thomas’ 216, matching Taylor Bibbs of Mississipp­i State, UTC’s Etienne Brault at 222 and Will Porter at 232 tied for ninth and 22nd in the individual tournament.

› The Dalton State men’s golf team repeated as champion of the Georgetown (Ky.) College Invitation­al on Tuesday at the Slammer & Squire course in St. Augustine, Fla., and the Dalton State women finished second. Both sets of Roadrunner­s are ranked third in the NAIA. The men totaled 591 for the two-day event, four strokes better than runner-up St. Andrews. DSC freshman S.M. Lee tied for fourth after a second-round, and Sport Allmond tied for 11th. Chase Cole and Adam Morris played as individual­s and finished sixth and 11th. Freshman Tia Teiniketo led the Lady Roadrunner­s by tying for second individual­ly, capped by a 72 on Tuesday, and Isabel Rijos tied for seventh with Katie Dalton sharing ninth and Hannah Gasaway playing as an individual and tying Rijos.

BASEBALL

› Batting first and second in the Lee University baseball lineup Tuesday at Young Harris, Spencer Mossburg and Geremy Walton each was 2-for-4 with a home run, and they combined to drive in seven runs in an 11-2 victory. Walton, who had four RBIs, also doubled and hit two sacrifice flies; leadoff man Mossburg walked twice. Miguel Pimentel also was 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Flames (10-2), and Zack Zyburt and Tyler Payne each scored twice with two official at-bats. Six Lee pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters, five by starter Wes Albert in 2 2/3 innings.

› The Cleveland State baseball team lost 5-4 to visiting Gordon State on Tuesday after trailing 5-0 through three innings. Sean McDermott began the Cougars’ three-run fourth with a home run and singled in their fourth run in the seventh. John Sharpe was 2-for-3 for Cleveland State (5-2), which will play a nonconfere­nce doublehead­er Saturday at Chattanoog­a State.
