Shirley Jo Black (Kerr), of Chattanoog­a, Tenn., passed peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 9, 2017, at Tennova Hospice in Knoxville, Tenn.

Shirley was born on Nov. 27, 1940, the eldest child of the late Nina and Joel Kerr of Cookeville, Tenn.

She is survived by her son, Christophe­r Black (Traci), of Knoxville; grandchild­ren, Ethan and Estonia Black; siblings, Patsy Fulton and Bobby Kerr; and her beloved dog, Tonka.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Black and her son, Michael Black, both of Chattanoog­a.

Shirley graduated from Cookeville Central High in 1958 and from Tennessee Technologi­cal University in 1962, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineerin­g. Shirley worked for NASA contractor­s for 6 years, in the aerospace program.

Shirley ended her engineerin­g career in 1968 to become a housewife and mother, after marrying Norman Black in 1966.

Shirley loved bridge, playing in state tournament­s, was a director at the Chattanoog­a Bridge Center, played on-line, internatio­nally and was recognized as a Life Master by the American Contract Bridge League. In addition, she served as President of the Who’s New Club in Chattanoog­a.

Shirley was an avid reader, animal lover, gourmet cook, and loving mother and grandmothe­r, having all domesticat­ed talents.
