NASHVILLE — The Hon. Douglas Alexander Meyer, 84, passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2017, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Chattanooga, Tenn., he graduated from Chattanooga City High School. After a stint in the U.S. Army, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Chattanooga and his law degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Judge Meyer began his career as an assistant district attorney before going into private practice. After first being appointed Chattanooga city judge, he went on to win reelection to that bench. He was then elected as Criminal Court Judge Division I in 1982, a post he held for 24 years, until his retirement in 2006 and subsequent move to Florida.

An avid golfer, Judge Meyer loved living on Rivermont Golf Course, where he spent many evenings walking and playing the course. He was very active in the community, serving in various capacities for multiple organizations over the years, including Bethel Bible Village, the Jaycees, Johnson Mental Health Center, and Alhambra Shrine. As a keen student of history, he was a voracious reader and continued his pursuit of knowledge throughout his life.
