Sooners QB faces multiple charges

- WIRE REPORTS

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has been arrested and charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Mayfield was booked into the Washington County Jail after first walking, then running away and being tackled by an officer following an altercation near Fayetteville’s Dickson Street early Saturday, police said. According to a preliminary police report, an intoxicated Mayfield first told an officer he was trying to break up an altercation, but that he later “was yelling profanities and causing a scene” while the officer questioned another man. After Mayfield was tackled, he refused to put his arms behind his back and was eventually forced into handcuffs before being arrested, police said. Oklahoma spokesman Michael Houck said the school is aware of the incident and pursuing details. Mayfield finished third in the Heisman balloting last year, and he set the Football Bowl Subdivision record for passing efficiency in a season. He led the Sooners to a victory over Auburn in the Sugar Bowl and was the game’s MVP after passing for 296 yards and two touchdowns. Two years ago, Mayfield finished fourth in the Heisman balloting and led the Sooners to the College Football Playoff.

› FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets have released Nick Mangold, the longest-tenured member of the team. An 11-year pro and a leader in the locker room, Mangold, 33, has said he doesn’t plan to retire. A first-round draft pick in 2006 who has played his entire career with the Jets, Mangold is a two-time AllPro and seven-time Pro Bowler. “While this is a sad day to leave so many great coaches, teammates and executives, I look forward to seeing what the future holds for me,” Mangold wrote in a statement he posted Saturday afternoon on Twitter. “I truly want to thank the fans for their amazing support over the past 11 years. It means a lot to see all the #74 jerseys in the crowd every Sunday. Thank you all for a fantastic 11 years!” Releasing him saves the Jets just less than $9.1 million against the salary cap. Mangold missed eight games last season with an ankle injury, which he said made him want to play in 2017. In December, he told The Associated Press: “Shoot, I love football. I miss it dearly, so I’m planning on playing.” His likely replacement is Wesley Johnson, who filled in last year when Mangold was hurt, though Johnson is a restricted free agent.

› SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent defensive tackle Earl Mitchell to a $16 million, four-year contract. The team announced the deal Saturday, a day after agreeing to the contract with the veteran run stuffer. Mitchell will be paid $5.5 million in 2017, a person familiar with the deal said on condition of anonymity because terms were not released. Mitchell was released earlier this month by Miami and decided on signing with the 49ers after also meeting with Seattle, Atlanta and Denver.

› GREENSBORO, N.C. — Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford said he’s encouraged that North Carolina lawmakers have filed bipartisan legislation to repeal a law that limits protections for LGBT people. The ACC and the NCAA pulled sporting events out of the state last fall in response to the so-called bathroom bill, which also requires transgender people to use restrooms in public buildings that correspond to the sex on their birth certificates. The plan to repeal House Bill 2 was filed Wednesday, though some gay rights groups and Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper — who prefers a simple repeal — have criticized add-ons to the proposal. “It’s encouraging that a bipartisan effort has been initiated in the North Carolina General Assembly regarding HB2,” Swofford said in a statement releasd Saturday. “If legislation is passed that resets the law as it was prior to HB2, it will present the opportunity to reopen the discussion with the ACC Council of Presidents regarding neutral site conference championships being in the state of North Carolina. The ACC is pleased the legislature is dedicated to resolving this important issue.”

› CLEVELAND — Free-agent guard Deron Williams has cleared waivers and told the Cleveland Cavaliers he intends to sign with them. The fivetime All-Star, waived earlier this week by Dallas, should give the defending NBA champions a playmaker they’ve needed all season and one star LeBron James demanded. Williams cannot sign with the Cavs until Monday. Cleveland hosts the Milwaukee Bucks that night. The Cavs will be the fourth team in a 12-year pro career for Williams, who is averaging 13.1 points this season.
