McCaffrey speedy at combine

- WIRE REPORTS

INDIANAPOLIS — Christian McCaffrey didn’t fare well in the bench press at the NFL scouting combine, managing 10 repetitions of the 225- pound test. That’s about half of what running backs usually average at the annual gathering, and it immediately set social media abuzz over the 2015 Heisman Trophy runner- up’s upper body strength. The Stanford star running back made up for that poor performance by clocking a time of 4.48 seconds in the 40- yard dash, ahead of LSU’s Leonard

Fournette (4.51). North Carolina’s T.J. Logan (4.37) had the best time, followed by Utah’s Joe Williams ( 4.41), North Carolina A&T’s Tarik

Cohen (4.42) and McCaffrey, who tied San Diego State’s Donnell Pumphrey.

› BOCA RATON, Fla. — A person with knowledge of the move said new Florida Atlantic University football coach Lane Kiffin is hiring his father, Monte Kiffin, to be part of his staff. The person spoke to The Associated Press Friday on condition of anonymity because Monte’s role has not been completely defined or announced by the university. The move will give the Owls three Kiffins — Lane’s younger brother Chris is the defensive coordinator. Monte worked on the staffs at Tennessee and Southern California when Lane was in charge there.

› The NCAA rules committee said Friday it wants to make it illegal for defenders to hurdle linemen to block a kick and to expand what constitutes a horse- collar tackle. It decided against tinkering with the targeting rule to eliminate the ejection penalty for some of the fouls. The rules committee also proposed requiring players to wear knee pads and pants that cover the knees. All proposals still need approval from the playing rules oversight panel, which meets April 19.
