Querrey tops Nadal in Mexican Open final

-

ACAPULCO, Mexico — Sam Querrey used a strong serve to beat Rafael Nadal

6-3, 7-6 (3) on Saturday night in the Mexican Open final. Querrey had 19 aces to win his ninth career title. He’s the first American champion in the history of the event. Querrey had a great week beating favored players on the road to the championship, knocking off fifth-seeded David Goffin, fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem, sixth-seeded Nick Kyrgios and second-seeded Nadal. It was Querrey’s first title since winning at Delray Beach in 2016. Nadal, the tournament winner in 2005 and 2013, had won 14 straight matches in Mexico.

BASEBALL

› Former All-Star catcher Kurt Suzuki had a hit and drove in a run for the Atlanta Braves as they lost 11-1 to Boston in a Grapefruit League game Sunday in Sarasota, Fla. Boston starter Kyle Kendrick threw four hitless innings. He’s in camp as a nonroster invitee. Andrew Benintendi doubled twice and AL MVP runner-up Mookie Betts had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly for the Red Sox.

BOXING

› LONDON — Tony Bellew caused a huge upset by moving up to the heavyweight class and stopping an injured David Haye in the 11th round in a gripping, all-British fight at the O2 Arena on Saturday night. Haye, in the third bout of his boxing comeback, appeared to hurt his right Achilles’ tendon as he skipped back in the sixth round but continued despite being an apparently easy target. Bellew, the WBC cruiserweight champion, showed patience in picking his moment to finish off Haye, and the end came with 53 seconds left of the 11th with a flurry of punches that sent his rival through the ropes. Haye climbed back into the ring, but his corner threw in the towel. The 36-year-old Haye had his eye on title fights with the likes of IBF champion Anthony Joshua, but that appears doubtful after the former WBA heavyweight champion’s third loss in a 31-fight career. Bellew (29-2-1, 19 KO) was giving up 11 pounds and fighting his first professional bout as a heavyweight.

WRESTLING

› DALLAS — A transgender boy who won a girls’ high school wrestling state title in Texas said he would compete against boys if allowed and is taking lower doses of testosterone to try to be fair to his opponents. Mack Beggs said in an interview that aired Sunday on ESPN that he competes against girls only because the state’s governing body for public high school sports requires him to wrestle under the gender listed on his birth certificate. Asked if he was taking the amount of testosterone he wanted while transitioning to male, Beggs said he was “holding back because of wrestling.” The 17-year-old Beggs recently won the 110-pound girls’ title as a junior for Euless Trinity High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
