Lee women win golf tournament
The Lee University women’s golf team won the Las Vegas Classic championship Monday with a final-round 287 in Nipton, Calif. Freshman Haverly Harrold was the medalist with a 71 after her opening 71, and Sam Burrus was fourth individually at 152 with Caroline Moore sbaring ninth at 156, Anne Hedegaard tied for 12th at 157 and Annika Gino at 158. Lee finished third in the men’s tournament with a 276 on Monday, led by tournament runner-up Matt Johnson with a 66 and a two-day total of 135. Shea Sylvester tied for 13th at 141.
› The UTC men’s golf team followed a first-round 295 Monday with a 275, the program’s best round since 2013, and are in eighth place — four shots out of fourth — with one round to go in the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at Aiken, S.C. Virginia leads the 18-team field at 543. Wes Gosselin is tied for 12th at 139 and Stuart Thomas isi at 142 (second-round 66) for the Mocs, with Lake Johnson at 143, Phillip Hickam at 147 and Brooks Thomas at 150.
BASKETBALL
› The Lee women’s basketball team received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament and will be in the South Region hosted by Eckerd.
› The Cleveland State teams both advanced into the quarterfinals of the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII basketball tournament with victories Monday in Morristown, but Chattanooga State’s Lady Tigers ended their season with a 71-42 loss to Volunteer State. Jemiah Harrison had 24 points and 12 rebounds and Samantha Parker scored 19 for Vol State, while Shashana Miller had 12 points and seven rebounds and
Taylor Simmons grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lady Tigers (8-19). Abby Hubert had 24 points and five steals and Leisa Butler had 19 points and nine rebounds in Cleveland State’s 78-64 win over the Columbia State women, and Romereo Hill had 22 points and eight rebounds, Tevin Olison 17 points and Victor
Curry 12 rebounds with nine points in the Cougars’ 82-70 defeat of Dyersburg State.
BASEBALL
› Bryan College freshman Wade Weinburger is the first Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball player of the week for 2017 after batting .714 with three home runs, eight RBIs, six runs and three walks in the Lions’ 3-0 weekend.
› Sewanee’s Trey Akins was the Southern Athletic Association player of the week after batting .692 with nine hits, 15 total bases, nine RBIs and four runs scored in a three-game sweep of Earlham.
› Cleveland State defeated the Tusculum junior varsity baseball team 3-0 and 9-2 on Monday. Jordan Ransom knocked in the first run and John Hennen followed with a tworun homer in going 2-for-3 in the first game for the Cougars (12-3), when Ryan Lloyd and
Greg Tye combined to pitch a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Chase Anderson homered and matched Chase Fullington and Trent Elliot, each of whom was 1-for-2, with two RBIs in game two, and John Sharpe was 2-for-4.
SOFTBALL
› Covenant College senior third baseman
Jordan Brett was the USA South softball player of the week after going 9-for-14 with a 1.143 slugging percentage in the Lady Scots’ 4-0 week. She had eight RBIs and seven runs.
› Brenau junior outfielder Kelsey Payne from East Hamilton was the SSAC softball player of the week for games Feb. 27-March 5. Payne batted .385 with an .885 slugging percentage, six extra-base hit and 10 RBIs in seven games. She homered, singled and drove in two runs in Saturday’s 6-1 defeat of Ave Maria in the Gulf Coast Invitational, when Savannah Moore from Soddy-Daisy was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Moore had a three-run homer and Payne was 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run in a 4-2 win over LSU Alexandria.
LACROSSE
› Sewanee’s Kit Sommi was the SAA women’s lacrosse defensive player of the week after adding three caused turnovers to a goal and an assist in Saturday’s win at Hendrix. She leads the league with 16 caused turnovers. The Tigers dropped to 4-1 with a 17-7 home loss Monday to Meredith, despite three goals and an assist by Meredith Sackett.
