Lee women win Point event

The Lee University women’s golf team shot a 296 on Tuesday at the Callaway Gardens course and won Point’s Skyhawk Invitation­al by 35 strokes. Lee totaled 600 for the two days, led by Sam Burrus as individual runner-up at 146 and Anne Hedegaard third at 149. Caroline Moore also made the all-tournament team with her 152, and Annika Gino was seventh at 153 with Haverly Harrold tied for 10th at 158.

› The Lee men tied for seventh out of 18 teams Tuesday in the Southeaste­rn Collegiate tournament loaded with ranked NCAA Division II teams at Valdosta’s Kinderlou Forest Golf Club. Florida teams finished first through fifth, led by top-ranked West Florida at 869. The Flames shot 895. Lee’s Shea Sylvester tied for ninth individual­ly at 220,

Corey Sheppard tied for 11th at 221 and

Matt Johnson shared 28th at 226.

BASEBALL

› Bryan College had the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference baseball player and pitcher of the week for games March 6-12. The top-player award went to sophomore Lake Burris from Chatsworth, Ga., who batted .313 with three homers and six RBIs as the Lions went 4-0. The honored pitcher was senior closer Chad Burrows, who got a win and two saves in his 5 1/3 innings of work, with six strikeouts and only three hits allowed. He is tied for first in the NAIA with seven saves for the season. The Lions, ranked 14th in the NAIA, rose to 21-5 with a 12-6 win Tuesday at Thomas. They’re supposed to play today at No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett. Against Thomas, Trevor Behrent was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Kila Zuttermeis­ter and Justin Morhardt each was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, Wade Weinburger and Sam Salyers homered and Mikey Rita scored three runs in Bryan’s 16th win in a row. ›

Miguel Pimentel had both hits Monday for the Lee baseball team, an RBI single in the first inning and a home run in the seventh, as the Flames lost 10-2 in the final game of their Gulf South Conference series at North Alabama.

SOFTBALL

› The Covenant College softball team won two USA South games Monday in damp, chilly, windy weather on Lookout Mountain: 9-2 and 14-6 over Agnes Scott. Shannon Schmitt and Casey Grover each was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the first win for the Lady Scots (12-6, 6-2), Schmitt with a triple and three runs scored, and Madalyn Ames also was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Jordan Brett and Erika Mast each was 2-for-3 with two runs, plus three and two RBIs, in game two, when Grover scored three runs and Ames and Madyson Gibbins each was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

› Rock Fitness/Miken went 3-0 and won the precipitat­ion-shortened Charlie Gossett Classic slowpitch softball tournament last Saturday on the Loookout Valley baseball field. With Matt Waters earning the MVP honor with a .889 batting average and Mikey Simpson, Dalton Parham, Tyler Waters and C.J. Silvers joining him on the all-tournament team, Rock Fitness won 22-5 over Southside Softball, 15-13 over Athletic Shop/King’s Men and 13-1 over the Tennessee Pushers. Athletic Shop beat the Pushers 14-2, and Southside won 26-14 over the Lighthouse Lookouts, who went 2-1. Athletic Shop’s Jimmy Thomas, Nathan Durham and Austin Parkison and Southside’s Rob Delay and Tyson Berry also were all-tournament.

LACROSSE

› Shorter University won 22-0 over the first-year Lee women’s lacrosse team Tuesday. Morgan Perrone had five goals and two assists, Crystal Marshall four goals and four assists and McKinley Puckett four goals for the Hawks (6-3, 2-2 GSC). Lee is 0-6, 0-3.

› The Sewanee women’s lacrosse team gave up three goals in the first three minutes of Tuesday’s game against visiting Gordon but won 11-6 as Molly Elkins scored three and Catherine Crigler, Meredith Sackett and Preston Cooper netted two apiece. The Tigers are 7-1.

› Nicolas Goldschmit­t scored five goals and Drew Wassenaar added four as the Tennessee Wesleyan men beat visiting St. Mary of Kansas 13-9 on Tuesday. Patrick DeMoss had 12 saves for the Bulldogs (2-6).
