FISHING

› The third-year Bryan College fishing team jumped past Alabama, North Alabama, South Carolina and Auburn into first place in the Cabela’s School of the Year standings with Nathan Bell’s and Dylan Pritchett’s big-fish catches last Saturday in the Cabela’s Collegiate Big Bass Bash presented by Berkley on snow-tinted Kentucky Lake. The event was cut from two days to one but included eight sessions Saturday, and Bell — from Riceville — caught the seventh-biggest bass of the day, a 6.81-pounder, in session eight. He got 513 points, and Pritchett — from Evensville — got 505 for his earlier 6.39-pounder. The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a went into the Bash in 17th place and had the biggest fish of session one, a 5.27-pounder by Gavyn Bridges, and 5.78and 5.70-pounders by Patrick Hoskins and Dylan Anderson in session eight. Bryan fishes Saturday in the FLW Southeaste­rn Regional on Lake Hartwell and next weekend in the Cabela’s College Open on Lake Dardanelle.

SOFTBALL

› The UTC softball team ends its pre-conference run of tournament­s this weekend at the USF Spring Break Invitation­al in Clearwater, Fla., beginning with games today at 1:30 and 6:15 p.m. against Monmouth (3-11) and Illinois. The Mocs (7-17), hampered by youth and injuries in the pitching staff, will face Colgate (4-10) and LIU-Brooklyn on Saturday and Fairfield on Sunday morning.

DEATHS

› A funeral service will be held Saturday for Ron “Giant” Evans, a longtime employee of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department who came to Chattanoog­a in 1978 to play basketball for UTC. He played until 1980. The Saturday service is set for noon at Greater Tucker Baptist Church, where his family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Evans’ body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home on Dodds Avenue. He died last Sunday.

› Former McCallie and UTC wrestling champion Jim Glasser died March 8 in Atlanta, where he coached Lovett School to 13 state titles, and a celebratio­n of his life is scheduled for 4 p.m. on March 28 in the Jim Glasser Wrestling Room at Lovett. A short service will be followed by a reception. After winning a Mid-South championsh­ip and two national prep titles during his 1965-67 McCallie career, Glasser won three SEIWA titles with the Mocs.
