Dalton State falls in NAIA
After winning 79-60 late Friday night, Dalton State (29-5) lost 82-73 to Texas Wesleyan (27-7) in an NAIA Division I men’s basketball quarterfinal Saturday night in Kansas City, Mo. DSC’s Reed Dungan scored 19 points and Carnilious Simmons had 17 points and 19 rebounds against Montana Western on Friday, when Sayvon Wilson scored 16 points and Isaiah Box had 11 points and nine assists. Box had 20 points and eight assists Saturday, when Wilson had 18 points and nine rebounds and Dungan scored 14 points.
› Chattanooga’s Youth and Family Development department was represented by two teams in the Tennessee State Special Olympics basketball tournament last weekend at Lipscomb University in Nashville, and Chattanooga Hoops won the Blue Division with wins of 26-20 over the Memphis Fitness Wildcats, 23-12 over the Maury County Jokers and 27-26 over the Wilson County Tigers. The champs included Keith, Michael, Daniel, Jay, Joe, Ryan, Austin, B.J. and Scott. Also representing the city well were Micah, Cayla, Angel, Grayson, Amanda, Julie, Haley, Amy, Phillip and Mark Shawn as Chattanooga Super Hoops, in their first state tourney.
BASEBALL
› Chattanooga State won 22-14 in its TCCAA baseball series finale Saturday at Cleveland State. Ethan Cummins was 4-for6 with a triple, a double and six RBIs, Nico Lares was 4-for-6 with two doubles and five RBIs, Tyler Maskill and Brody Thomasson each had three hits and three RBIs, Thomasson with a home run, for the Tigers (14-12, 4-5). Conner Morro was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and matched Thomasson and Maskill with four runs scored. For the Cougars (167, 5-4), Cameron Payne was 3-for-6 with two homers, five RBIs and three runs, Sean McDermott was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and three runs, Brett Browning was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Joey Roberson was 3-for-3 and scored three times.
› Covenant College won twice at home Saturday against Emory, the top-ranked baseball team in NCAA Division III, 12-10 and 8-2. Joel Johnson was 2-for-4 with a three-run homer and Alex Kerr was 2-for-4 with a tworun blast and matched Forrest Hunter with three runs scored for the Scots (8-13) in the first game, when Trenton Nobles also homered and Julien Amorelli was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Devin Cerrato stole four bases in the doubleheader and hit an RBI triple in the finale, when Johnson was 2-for-3 with three RBIs again, Kerr homered again, Luke Harvey was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and three pitchers allowed only six hits and one earned run.
› Lee University baseball coach Mark Brew registered his 500th victory Saturday in the Flames’ 8-1 Gulf South home win over Shorter. The Hawks won the first game in 12 innings, 3-2. Nathan Wierzgac and Drew Johnson each was 2-for-4, Wierzgac with a triple and an RBI, in the loss for Lee (17-9, 7-7). Johnson was 2-for-2 with a homer, two times hit by pitches, two RBIs and two runs in the rematch, when Wierzgac also homered, was plunked and scored twice, Jeffrey Chapuran was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Peyton Meeker and Geremy Walton each was 2-for-4 and Rob Gustitus pitched a three-hitter. Brew is 500-154-2 in his 11th season.
› No. 10 Tennessee Wesleyan won 11-3 and 17-13 in its AAC doubleheader Saturday at No. 14 Bryan, dropping the Lions to 21-9, 6-3, and lifting the Bulldogs to 20-8, 8-1.
› Sewanee won 4-3 and lost 4-2 in SAA baseball Saturday at Hendrix. Drew Mancuso (5-1) got the Tigers’ pitching win and Daniel McDonnell the save, and Ryan Poole was 2-for-4 and scored a run. In the loss for Sewanee (10-9, 3-1), Max Murray was 2-for-2 and Trey Akins and Mancuso each had a hit and an RBI.
› Seventh-ranked South Carolina edged No. 24 Tennessee 6-4 in the 10th inning of their SEC matchup Saturday in Knoxville. The Gamecocks (13-5, 2-0) totaled only four hits but got the deciding runs on a bases-loaded walk and a hit batter. Pete Derkey was 3-for-5 and Brodie Leftridge was 2-for-4 for Tennessee (12-4, 0-2).
› This is “Everybody Loves Raymond Day” in East Ridge in honor of longtime former Montague Park and Camp Jordan Park supervisor Raymond Byrd. The event at Camp Jordan is sponsored by East Ridge Parks and Recreation and Pruitt Health in Fort Oglethorpe, where Byrd lives, in conjunction with a 1:30 U.S. Veterans Baseball League between the East Ridge Braves and Cleveland Bulls. Byrd may umpire for a half-inning. A second game will match USVBL all-stars against an adult-league all-star team from Dalton.

› UTC men’s golf coach Mark Guhne will be the guest speaker for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club’s noon luncheon meeting at noon Monday at Finley Stadium, and the public is invited. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without.
