‘Birth of Baseball’ at Harrison Bay

The “Birth of Baseball” will be celebrated Saturday at the Harrison Bay State Park group camp field, beginning at 10 a.m., and it is free except for concession­s visitors choose to buy. Organized by the Tennessee Associatio­n of Vintage Base Ball, Tennessee State Parks and Friends of Harrison Bay SP, it will include a cricket game at 10 and a rounders game at 11, both open to those attending. And Chattanoog­a’s two TAOVBB teams will play 1860s style base ball (two words at the time) at 1 p.m. The Travelling Caudells will play period music for the event. “We hope everyone — families, baseball fans, history buffs — comes out … to share in an exciting program,” TAOVBB commission­er Jeff Wells said in an announceme­nt release. “It’s a unique opportunit­y to play, interact and have fun with historic sports.”

› Lee won 6-4 at Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday. Spencer Mossburg was 3-for-6,

Peyton Meeker was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Jordan Howard homered for the Flames (4-14). Wes Albert improved to 3-2 on the mound and Jumpei Akanuma earned his first save this season.

› Tennessee Wesleyan University moved up from 10th to fifth in the NAIA baseball poll Tuesday, and Wednesday the Bulldogs lost 10-9 and won 15-6 in a doublehead­er against visiting Talladega. The Bulldogs are 21-9. Bryan College dropped five spots to 19th in the poll after being swept by TWU last weekend.

› Sewanee split a long doublehead­er against Calvin College on Wednesday at Smokies Park in Kodak, Tenn., with the Tigers winning 4-3 in 10 innings before losing 11-4 in 11 innings. Sewanee is 12-10.

› Cleveland State won a road doublehead­er Wednesday against Tusculum College’s junior varsity, 6-0 and 7-1. In the first game,

John Hennen was 3-for-3 with a walk and drove in a run, John Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Billy Brand had two RBIs. Ryan Lloyd (3-1) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings, and Jared McDonald

pitched the final two innings of the shutout. In the second game, Hooper Mills was 3-for-4, Brett Browning was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Brandon Mason and Cameron Payne each was 2-for-3 and Joey Roberson walked twice for the Cougars (18-7). Cleveland State starter Grant Crosby (3-2) allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in six innings. GOLF

› After setting program records for 18 and 36 holes (287 and 563), the NAIA’s thirdranke­d Dalton State College men’s golf team won the seven-team Fairfield Inn & Suites Intercolle­giate tournament Tuesday by 38 strokes with a 54-hole-record 846 (18 under par) at the Harbor Club at Lake Oconee in Georgia. The Roadrunner­s’ S.M. Lee, ranked No. 1 individual­ly, followed two 68s with a 65 for a school-record 201, 10 strokes ahead of runner-up teammate P.J. Shields. DSC’s Dalton Johnson was fourth at 216, Sport Allmond was seventh at 221, Ben Rebne was ninth at 224 and Chase Cole and Adam Morris tied for 10th at 225.

SOFTBALL

› Lee swept a doublehead­er Wednesday at King University, 3-0 and 9-1, to improve to 20-9. In the opener, Kayla Louie was 3-for3 with a walk, Leigh Beatenboug­h and

Brooklynn Frazier each was 2-for-4 — Frazier with a home run — and Stevie Baird and Abby McKinney each added an RBI. Beatenboug­h (10-4) struck out four batters with one walk while giving up seven hits in the shutout. In the second game, Baird and Beatenboug­h each had two hits (including a double) with two RBIs, while Annabeth Pruett was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Adding a double was Taylor Moran (5-2), who allowed six hits while striking out three.

› Covenant split a home doublehead­er against Centre, losing 7-1 and winning 6-4 to move to 16-10. In the win, Joni Johnson

had a two-run double and recorded her third save this season, Madalyn Ames and

Madyson Gibbins each was 2-for-3 and

Tyler Epes (5-1) struck out four batters in five innings. In the loss, Jordan Brett was 3-for-4 with an RBI double.

› Tennessee Wesleyan swept Wednesday’s doublehead­er with Truett McConnell, 5-4 and 8-0, to improve to 12-8 overall and 6-2 in the Appalachia­n Athletic conference.
