Golf Mocs 8th in Old Waverly

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a men’s golf team finished eighth out of 16 teams Tuesday at the storm-shortened Old Waverly Collegiate tournament at West Point, Miss. The Mocs shot a 288 on Tuesday, one stroke better than in the first round, but slipped four spots. South Florida won with a 560 and Lipscomb was second at 566. The Mocs’ Brooks Thomas tied for 11th individual­ly at 141, while Wes Gosselin tied for 34th at 146 and Etienne Brault and Andrew Weathers shared 50th at 148. Stuart Thomas shot 151.

› With the third round canceled Tuesday because of thundersto­rms at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., the UTC women’s golfers wound up tied for 13th at 620 in the 16-team Web.com Intercolle­giate. The Mocs’ Monica San Juan tied for 20th individual­ly at 152, two shots ahead of Cristina Perez. East Tennessee State won at 598, four strokes ahead of runner-up Cincinnati.

› The Lee University women’s golf team moved up two places to second with a finalround 293 in the Argonaut Invitation­al at the Marcus Pointe Golf Club in Pensacola, Fla. The Lady Flames, ranked 14th in NCAA Division II, totaled 601 compared to the 575 for 13th-ranked West Florida. Lee’s Caroline Moore tied for fifth individual­ly at 146, while Annika Gino was seventh at 150, Sam Burrus tied for 11th and Anne Hedegaard was 15th. Haverly Harrold also made the top 20.

› Lee’s seventh-ranked men tied for fourth with 295 at the Tennessee River Rumble on Tuesday at the Tennessee National Golf Club in Loudon. It was supposed to be a 54-hole tournament but was cut to 18 holes for weather reasons. Lee’s Matt Strube played as an individual and was third in the medalist chase and all-tournament with a 3-under-par 69. Counting for the Flames, Adam Wright shot 72, Shea Sylvester 73, Matt Johnson 74 and Corey Sheppard 76.

BASKETBALL

› The Hoops for Hope tournament featuring area teams from various medical profession­al groups is set for Saturday at Chattanoog­a State, beginning at 11 a.m. Admission costs $5 for adults and $3 for students and children, and proceeds will go to Hatch’s House of Hope, a no-cost family service of the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. Hosted by Chattanoog­a State’s radiation therapy program, the tournament includes teams representi­ng Erlanger Radiation Therapy, T.C. Thompson Emergency Room, Erlanger E.R., Memorial Radiation Therapy, Parkridge Hospital and Voytik Ortho Center as well as Chattanoog­a State Radiology. Chances to win gift cards and other door prizes will be available for spectators.

BASEBALL

› Geremy Walton and Drew Johnson each homered and batted in two runs and Peyton Meeker also had two RBIs as Lee University beat visiting Albany State 10-1 in nonconfere­nce baseball Tuesday. Tyler Payne was 2-for-3 and scored three runs, and Wes Albert and three relievers pitched a combined six-hitter with nine strikeouts.

› Lindsey Wilson won 3-1 over Tennessee Wesleyan, ranked sixth in NAIA baseball, on Tuesday. That dropped the Bulldogs to 26-12.

› No. 20-ranked Bryan College beat No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett 5-0 on Tuesday as nine pitchers, one per inning, combined on a three-hitter and Wade Weinburger went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Trevor Behrent, Justin Morhardt, Brookes Jones and Mikey Rita each was 2-for-4 for the Lions, Behrent with an RBI.

› Slade Dale from Ringgold went 2-for4 and knocked in four of the runs for Berry College in a 27-4 rout of visiting Covenant. Donny Lewis had two RBIs and Caleb Bloye was 2-for-4 and scored twice for Covenant (12-18), while Trenton Nobles was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Joel Johnson also had two hits in stretching his hitting streak to 14 games.

SOFTBALL

› Sewanee’s scheduled softball doublehead­er Tuesday at Maryville College was canceled.

› UTC canceled today’s scheduled home softball game against UAB because of the threat of severe storms.
